This text contains real and fictitious texts, written by me, and accompanied by a fragment of a novella from 1990 by the Dutch writer Willem Frederik Hermans. This text was part of a lecture/performance in Ferrotopia at the NSDM wharf in Amsterdam in 2018.
This lecture is part of a series of four lectures, developed for the AKI-academy, Enschede, The Netherlands, for the department Crossmedia Design. These lectures are the points of reference for short presentations created by the participating students.
After a short illness, Aaf van Essen died of cancer. She was one of the most valuable people in Art and Design education. As a tribute and playful commemoration, a number of friends and colleagues put together an alphabet of short presentations, based on Gilles Deleuze's Abécédaire. My letter was the 'O', round, perfect, seemingly indestructible, but also as ephemeral as all letters, words and people are. The 'O' reminds me of soap bubbles, the ultimate symbol of ephemerality, and for centuries depicted as an eloquent allegory of our short-lived human existence: Homo Bulla.
This lecture addresses the many aspects of so-called Conditional Design. Conditional Design supposes the necessity of specific rules and algorithms in order to attain a kind of structured freedom.
This lecture is part of a series of four lectures, developed for the AKI-academy, Enschede, The Netherlands, for the department Mixed Media. These lectures are the points of reference for 5-minute presentations created by the participating students.
In the framework of a general discussion about the Holocaust Memorial in Amsterdam, a proposal by Daniel Libeskind and the Auschwitz Committee, an evening was organised by a group of opponents at House De Pinto in Amsterdam. I presented my proposal for an intervention vis à vis a controversial monument on the university premises, commissioned by Innsbruck University in 2018.

This lecture was presented for first year students from the department Interior and Furniture Design, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. The lecture addresses the sometimes fascinating relationship between furniture and architectural space. Well-known buildings are paired with extraordinary furniture pieces, that present special relationships by means of material, spatial and transitional relationships, social dynamics, or the sheer mythical connection between landscape, architecture and furniture. The archetypical furniture pieces are: Chair, Bed, Bench, Table, and Chimney.
This lecture was developed in the framework of a project week, dedicated to the colour Red, for students of the second year of the department Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, Royal academy of Art, The Hague.
On November 30th, 2018 I presented my proposal for the Innsbruck University art commission. This presentation was used for contextualising and explaining my intervention, with respect to a controversial memorial from 1926, that is located on the university's premises.
3rd year students from the Interior Architecture & Furniture Design department are developing ideas and products for Forbo, an major international Linoleum producer.
As introduction I developed this presentation in order to (re-)consider the phenomenon of so-called period rooms, which either (re-)present a specific style period, or can be considered as frozen artefacts.
This lecture both highlights and questions the assets of the Bauhaus period, the dominant style movement prior to the advent of post-modernism in the 1970s. Bauhaus advocated industrial repetition and mass production. Forbo delivers enormous quantities of linoleum, but also maintains the necessary variation in order to 'customise' interior architecture projects.
On September 6th, 2018, I presented a lecture/performance in the framework of a lecture series curated by Joost Janmaat/Partizan Public and Rieke Vos. My lecture/performance was a loose configuration of facts and fiction, touching iron, metallurgy, geology, cold war economy, and the unique work of Dutch writer W.F. Hermans.
Between August 2017 and January 2018 I will develop The Age of Techno-Animism with 30 students from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. The project will result in a publication and an exhibition in February 2018. This Slideshow was used as general introduction for the participants.
This Keynote lecture was held on the occasion of the yearly Internet Of Things conference, organised by the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences in April, 2017.
Abstract: Once upon a time animism ruled people’s beliefs: both organisms and objects were imbued with a conscience. The conception that there is no distinct division between objects and organisms seems to be gaining ground again, since today’s Internet of Things increasingly creates organisms that used to be called objects. Consequently, the distinction between myth and science will gradually disappear.
New Frontiers aims to pair innovative economical models with the way people live, work and celebrate, under the umbrella of the Next Economy and the visual cultures that grow as a consequence. The New Frontiers department seeks an answer to these developments, and provides effective criticism regarding top-down economics.

Macguffin magazine - The Desk - Nederlandse versie
1. 1
Macguffin magazine – The Evolution of the Desk as Cockpit
traditionele bureau moest vervangen.
David Roentgen - Neuwieder Kabinett (1777)
eeuw.
William S. Wooton - Wooton Desk (1874-1884)
“A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place” was in de jaren zeventig van de
enkele handeling administratieve efficiency bereikt. Door de ordeningsprincipes die in het
bureau waren vervat konden administratieve werkzaamheden aanmerkelijk worden
versneld.
produceren volgens hun kwaliteitsnormen.
frivoliteit is.
Vannevar Bush – Memex Desk (1948)
waarin meerdere systemen interacteerden.
