Team Communication Essay example
Team communication is vital in many aspects of our professions. It is human nature to coexist with others in various roles: be it in the military,
emergency medicine, football, or even school. The American Heritage Dictionary (n.d.) defines communication as the exchange of thoughts, messages,
or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior.
While serving in the United States Armed Forces, service members have to learn to take orders from those that are ranked higher than themselves.
But it is also critical to be able to listen to those who are subordinates as well. The team concept and bonding with fellow sailors, Marines, soldiers, or
airmen can be the difference between life and death. When out at sea on a ship there...show more content...
But many times, emergency medicine may be initialized by emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, or police officers in the field.
Many of the communication tools used in the emergency room have to be incorporated by these first responders. A massive team effort is required at
times between various departments when dealing with a medical emergency outside of a hospital setting. Many times, the police arrive to an
emergency first. They may be required to perform CPR until the paramedics with the fire department arrive. Once they get to the scene, they will take
over most emergency functions, but will need a report from the officers detailing what they found and how many cycles of CPR they have performed.
The paramedics will determine whether they need to transport the patient to the nearest hospital by ambulance or, in an extreme emergency, by medical
helicopter. Once the crew arrives at the emergency room, the paramedics must give their report to the hospital staff so that they can take over and
perform their lifeā€“saving duties.
Football teams must communicate on a regular basis on offense, defense, special teams, and within the coaching ranks. On offense, the offensive
coordinator will relay a play for the offense to the quarterback. He in turn will relate said

Throughout this course of study, the concept of language as the demarcation between animals and humans has prevailed. Further, as we have seen in
our class readings, many claim that it is through language that our "consciousness" and "cognitive" skills are developed.
Accordingly, these skills are necessary for us to interpret and conceptualize our world. What this infers is that because we have these skills and the
"brute" animals do not, animals do not possess the ability to analyze or think about their world. When presented in this manner, I was

The concept of mind "Encompasses sense perception, feeling and emotion, traits of character and personality, and the volitional aspects of human
life, as well as the more narrowly intellectual phenomena" (Griffin 163). Consciousness in an entity suggests "an organism which can have
intentions... the ability to form a plan, and make a decision to adopt the plan" (Griffin 164). Although these terms are defined by their human
references, studies indicate that animals, and even insects, demonstrate emotion, volition, and planning in their daily lives. For example, the
communicative dances of honeybees convey multiā€“level messages that suggest conscious thought and the incorporation of new information (Griffin
178). Similarly, wild vervet monkeys have a system whihc allows them to alert others in their group to potential danger.
Diamond states that they "have a natural form of symbolic communication based on grunts, with slightly different grunts to mean
"leopard," eagle," and "snake." (Diamond 55). What is significant is that the concept of volition is also evident vervet
monkeys when they "fake" a grunt in order to scatter the other monkeys away from food. Hence, volition and communication should not be
considered unique to the human animal. The ability to manipulate objects and to investigate new information is considered another hallmark of the

Communication Theories Essay
In interpersonal communication there are many theories that are similar yet different in many ways. The theories can be combined to describe people
and how those people interact and communicate with each other. Many of these theories help explain how people in society form impressions of
others, how they maintain these impressions, why people interact with certain people in society, and how people will use these impressions that they
have formed later on in life. These theories also help people to better understand themselves, to better understand interpersonal communication, and to
better understand people in general. There are two theories in interpersonal communication that, despite their differences, can go hand in hand. The first

213). As a whole, society tends to mirror the emotions of the person who is speaking or of the person who is playing a part. If a person goes to a
play and the actors are experiencing fear, than the people who are watching the play will tend to experience that same fear. If one actor is mad at
another actor, than the people watching the play will either experience that same emotion of anger or they will side with the other actor and experience
the emotion that the other actor is feeling, whether it be uncertainty about why the other actor is mad at them or a feeling of sadness because the other
actor is mad at them. Imitating others emotions happens all the time in society and as long as there is communication between people, whether it is
verbal or nonverbal, this catching of emotions will continue.
The interaction adaptation theory and the emotional contagion theory both have similarities and differences, just like any other set of theories. Both of
these theories suggest that people adapt to people who are around them and whom they interact with. These two theories allow people to mirror those
with whom they communicate with. These theories go hand in hand because when you are communicating with someone and mirroring their actions
and behaviors, it is hard to not mirror their emotions. If someone is sad and decides to talk to someone about their problem,

Essay on Rules of Communication
Communication
Communication is a process of imparting or transferring thoughts from one entity to another either through language or writing or some other signs
(Wrench, McCroskey & Richmond, 2008). Language and other methods of communication, which are appropriate in one semantic environment, are
usually not utilized in another semantic environment. For example in playgrounds and sports, children use the expressions like "game plan" or
"Captain of the ship" which cannot be used in a different semantic environment for example workplace. Thus language used in one semantic
environment requires first "setting up the modes of discourse and consequently the modes of inquiry of the second" (Postman, 1984).
Nonverbal Communication

People usually consider themselves more impressive and authoritative if they are taller than their subjects or subordinates (Bull, 1987). Another study
proved that smiling more frequently decreases the depression and stress (Freitasā€“MagalhŠ“Šˆes & Castro, 2009). Studies have also concluded that women
are more familier with nonverbal communication (Agneta & Anthony, 2000).
Physical Space
Physical Space between the people, who are communicating, plays an important role in nonverbal communication; however, different cultures perceive
and use space in different manners (Segerstrale & Molnar, 1997). While defining the behavior of people regarding personal space in nonverbal
communication, the term territory is widely used. According to researchers there are four types of territories:
Primary Territory: it is the space which is very personal to someone like his home
Secondary territory: Although it is not very exclusive and personal, though people feel some attachment to it like a specific bench in the park etc.
Public territory: it is not at all exclusive and only allotted for a limited time, for example a parking space
Interaction territory: it is also a temporary territory created by people when they are communicating. For example when players of a team are talking
while walking down the road, people do not disturb them (Hargie & Dickson, 2004).

Many theories developed assist in terms of families, caregivers, patients, and coworkers. These guides are models in our daily lives that give an ideal
of what development we should incorporate to understand those around us. Cognitive dissonance theory, communication accommodation theory,
coordinated management of meaning, cultivation analysis, and many more theories are on the rise as we advance communication. Cognitive theory,
argues that incompatible beliefs are inevitable and people are prone to avoid issues. Communication accommodation theory is adjusting styles of
speaking to meet the styles of others. Coordinated management of meaning, states we have the ability to organize in our minds millions of messages a

Finally, family communication relies on personal history and understanding the personalities and beliefs, allowing effective communication. With

Business Communication Essay example
Business communication needs to become interpersonal again. No matter how we believe our human forms came into existence, we were built to need
personal contact and function best with faceā€“toā€“face communication. As children, we desired comfort from touch, a hug from our mothers. As
teenagers, we held hands with our boyfriend or girlfriend. As adults in the workforce, we still need to feel that connection and comfort with our
families and the people we work with. As Susan RoAne (2008), owner of a speaking, consulting, and coaching business, discusses one way we feel this
connection is through getting to know and building trust by communicating inā€“person. Through this interpersonal interaction, we not only feel more

For the greatest success of the business, employees need interpersonal communication to connect with their coā€“workers. A leadership expert, John C.
Maxwell (2010) says: "Connecting goes beyond words." (p. 41). Physically being in the same room, verbally speaking thoughts, engaging in eye
contact, and being able to see nonverbal responses are all important and add to a person's understanding of the message being communicated and feeling
a connection. Overall, communicating faceā€“toā€“face is more natural for employees. An employee knows who is hearing what they are saying and seeing
their nonverbal gestures. The employee can either get immediate feedback whether or not the person understands or agrees or disagrees. The
communication does not have to be formatted as it does on paper. An employee should still present themselves professionally, but communicating
faceā€“toā€“face is a process, instead of format.
Through inā€“person communication, employees will be able to not only build needed connections, but relationships and trust with coā€“workers in the
business. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is like a staircase, a person needs to satisfy the lower stairs to easily reach and fulfill the higher staircases. If you

Essay about My Communication Skills
My Communication Skills Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always
been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but
still have trouble dealing with perception and selfā€“image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the
workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment....show more content...
My goals for improving selfā€“image are first to make the steps to be the person I want to be. Whether it is through exercise or education myself to build
up my intellectual strength. Making a selfā€“image inventory, noting those things that I like about myself. The make a list of the negative traits that I
want to improve. Changing my focus from negative to positive should help me avoid being depressed. The best thing I can do I recognize my
shortcomings but don't dwell on them. A key characteristic in dire need of improvement would be my perception. I was raised in an environment
where stereotypes and first impressions were the norm. Expecting certain actions from people based on what I've heard or seen in the past, not being
empathetic in my views. In circumstances like UOP, if a student does not interact or participate at the same level as myself, they would be interpreted
as being a procrastinator. I certainly have issues with trust, usually taking a cautious approach to the team atmosphere in fear of not meeting the
courses expectations. In the last few classes I have posted questions and asked for feedback on peoples expectations in hopes that I can be more

Human Communication Essay example
Throughout the years there have been different ways that humans communicate with each other whether it be from talking, body language, or sign
language. But how does this communication affect us as human beings? There are many different types of communication such as Interpersonal
Communications, Intrapersonal Communications, and Crossā€“Cultural Communications. Finding out how people communicate with each other is a key
factor in our lives and we need to be able to understand how we can communicate better with ourselves and each other especially when it comes to
communicating with people with cultures unlike ours. Humans have been communicating for years with themselves and others but only in the last

2). There are three aspect of intrapersonal communication. "Selfā€“concept is the basis for intrapersonal communication because it determines how a
persona sees him/herself and is oriented toward others. Selfā€“Concepts (also called selfā€“awareness) involves three factors: beliefs, values and attitudes."
(Intrapersonal and Interpersonal" p. 2). Beliefs we base upon our religion, our upbringing and our personal knowledge on things that we know about.
We have values that by being up brought have been instilled inside of us and we base right and wrong not only on values but beliefs as well.
Attitudes are how we view a particular topic and/or person and they way we feel about a topic is the way we present ourselves and our attitude. "Other
things that can affect selfā€“concept are personal attributes, talents, social role, even birth order/" (Intrapersonal and Interpersonal" p. 2). Selfā€“concept
looks inward into a person. The next aspect looks outward and this is called perception. "Perception of the outside world also is rooted in beliefs,
values and attitudes. It is so closely intertwined with selfā€“concept that one feeds off the other, creating a harmonious understanding of both oneself and
ones world" ("Intrapersonal and Interpersonal" p. 2). Both perception
