The concept of insurance is not a new phenomenon in the history of human civilization. It has been around since the days of Babylon in Mesopotamia aimed at protecting private property, real estate, commercial and family affairs. Similarly, the idea and practice of Takaful is not new as it was practiced during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by its adoption of the concept of Aqilah. Starting the 1970s and increasingly in the 1990s, Islamic countries and other countries with a significant Muslim population have encouraged the provision of financial services, including insurance, under Islamic principles. The concept of Takaful or Islamic insurance was first introduced in Sudan in 1979, inspired by the growing needs of the Muslim consumers for an insurance protection that conforms to the Islamic law. In Malaysia, the emergence of the first Takaful operator took place in 1985 .This paper describes the concept of al-Takaful in Islam and its development in Malaysia, specifically in the establishment of Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Berhad (TMB), Malaysia’s pioneer in Islamic insurance

c. A description of the organization’s position and role in the community. Who are the organization’s collaborating partners in the community?
d. A discussion of the ways the organization is unique in comparison to others providing similar services.
Professor’s Notes
Who are you? Organizations have mission statements that essentially drive the organization, vision statements focus on where the organization sees itself going, values statements that explain the organization ‘s beliefs and priorities. Ideally these complement one another.
For example, the American Red Cross offers the following:
Mission Statement
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
Vision Statement
The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that...
...all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope;
...our communities are ready and prepared for disasters;
...everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products;
...all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and
...in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.
Fundamental Principles of the Global Red Cross Network (Values)
Humanity
The Red Cross, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors—in its international and national capacity—to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.
Impartiality

The document discusses approaches to rehabilitating terrorists and countering violent extremism through community engagement. It argues that both "hard" security measures and "soft" rehabilitation programs are needed to address the long term drivers of terrorism. Effective rehabilitation programs require a holistic approach involving government, civil society and the private sector. Such programs aim to transform individuals' ideological beliefs while reintegrating them and preventing recidivism through engagement with resilient communities. Challenges include the lack of understanding, resources and whole-of-society coordination often needed for rehabilitation programs to be truly effective.
The document summarizes an international conference on Islamic microfinance. It discusses various models of microfinance and their achievements. It emphasizes the importance of the cooperative model, highlighting the case study of Al Barakah Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, an Islamic microfinance cooperative in Mauritius. The conference explores concepts like ownership, accountability and worldviews from an Islamic perspective in the context of establishing sustainable Islamic microfinance.
This document provides information on potential practicum sites for SIT graduate students in Service, Leadership, and Management. It lists over 30 organizations that have previously hosted SIT practicum students or interns. These organizations cover a wide range of fields including health services, peacebuilding, human rights, international development, education, and the environment. The document emphasizes that the list is not exhaustive and that students have completed practicums in many other settings not mentioned. It encourages students to consider the wide range of opportunities available to them.
Takaful is an Islamic insurance system based on the principles of tabarru' (voluntary donation) and ta'awun (mutual support). It involves participants contributing to a common fund and receiving compensation from that fund in the event of defined losses, allowing for risk sharing in accordance with Islamic principles. The key elements of ta'awun in takaful are mutual responsibility, cooperation, and protection, as supported by Quranic verses and hadith emphasizing mutual aid and assistance among Muslims. Takaful aims to provide financial protection to participants while avoiding elements like interest, ambiguity, and gambling that are prohibited in Islam.
Peace has many faces. This booklet presents eight stories which show how people in Zim
-
babwe managed to deal peacefully with conflicts. We hear about Chishuwo (23) in Epworth,
Memory (31) in Murehwa and Jabuliso (92) in Bulawayo – how they succeeded in overcoming
potentially disastrous divisions in their community or their cooperative, how they managed
to forgive people who had treated them violently or had caused other harm to them.
Women talk about how they became victims of politically motivated violence – and how they
learnt to make the most of their lives after their terrible ordeal. We hear how a community
forum can encourage divided residents to lay aside their different opinions and ideologies
and plan together for the development of their village, be it the construction of a well or a
school.
All eight stories have one thing in common: In each case, the best way out of an apparently
unsolvable conflict or a hopeless situation was found only after the intervention of a Zim
-
babwean peace organisation.
These eight organisations have one thing in common as well: They are assisted by expert
personnel from the German Civil Peace Service (CPS) programme. Lawyers, mediators,
psychologists and other CPS experts advise Zimbabwean peace organisations on how to
implement their projects. They all contribute to a more peaceful Zimbabwe by encouraging
people to change their behaviour and tackle conflicts in a peaceful manner.

This document discusses the functions of governmental public relations. It notes that governmental public relations is inspired by Grunig's models of public relations, particularly symmetrical communication between organizations and publics. Symmetrical communication aims for mutual understanding and benefit between parties. While symmetrical communication may be difficult for governments, the focus on mutual understanding provides a framework. The document examines how governments can adapt symmetrical models to better communicate and engage with the public.

To me, it really seems visible today that ethics is not something exterior to the economy, which as technical matter, could function on its own; rather, ethics is an interior principle of the economy itself, which cannot function if it does not take account of the human values of solidarity and reciprocal responsibility."

Overview:
In week six we explore the future of ethical business as a direct result of globalization. We examine the economic climate and the distribution of wealth and notion of distributive justice. We ask the ethical question: Do businesses that own 83% of the wealth have a moral obligation to spread the wealth around? The sub-theme is whether it is government’s role alone or through regulation of business to make the distribution less disparate.
Theme 1: The Effects of Globalization:The Role of Business in the Distribution of Wealth and Resources
The effects of globalization have created an increasingly disparate division between the distributions of wealth in the world. The ownership of land, industry and natural resources is in the hands of large multinational corporations and the wealth of the world is in the hands of a few. The problem of justice and economic distribution, sometimes called distributive justice is a question that faces the globe. Main questions include: What is fair and just in the distribution of the costs and rewards of an economic system? What different principles of distribution can be used, and what are the consequences of each different scheme or principle? Should some versions of laissez–faire be adopted, or should communitarian/socialist scheme be used? (Helpful principles to discuss, Utilitarianism, John Rawls’ Theory of Justice, Robert Noziack’s libertarianism, Adam Smith’s invisible hand, Marxist (secular) or Christian, Jewish, Islamic socialism).

Cooperation and Mutual Help-Key
to
Strengthen Social Security in our Society
Takaful system as a business model and as an
alternative to insurance has developed considerably
over last two decades to attract even global financial
institutions, but it “still needs to address fundamental
questions” (IFSB-IRTI Mid-Term Review, May 14).
Rather, its compound annual growth rate of 22 %
between 2007 and 2011, decelerated to 16 % in 2012
(IFN, Feb. 14).
In the competitive business world, some „Corporations‟
are bigger than some economies even (e.g. Exxon is
bigger than Thailand, Conoco Phillips is worth more
than Pakistan, and Wal-Mart‟s revenues now put it
ahead of 157 of the world‟s 182 countries). When a
superstore moves into an area, small and medium
outlets in the neighborhood suffer and many lose their
bread earning source.
Human beings need to have smaller level institutions
with relatively focus on mutual and cooperation based
entities. The governments, regulators, think tanks and
scholars must support localized, small-scale,
community-level institutions. At the outset, the focus
needs to be on social security and mutual help
institutions.

2. We need any sort of organizations whose structure and values reflect the
mutual/ cooperative form. While for informal sector, only smaller / local level
entities could work properly, at medium and large scale, only formal
institutions regulated by the relevant State organs would be needed to avoid
fraudulent practices on the part of unscrupulous elements in the society.
Such institutions might include limited companies owned by people-based
organizations, fraternity based committees, friendly societies, takafuls, non-
profit micro finance and SME ventures, jointly established awqaf for benefit of
lower and the middle class, community organizations and foundations. This
mutual system could also be used as savings / investments and house
construction / motor vehicle /marriage plan, etc. vehicle.
According to a well-known Hadith, “The attitude of the believer and feeling of
brotherhood to one another is like that of the single body. When one part of
the body is hurt, it shall have an effect on the whole body."Quran and Sunnah
have encouraged the providing of security for the widows, orphans and the
poor. The holy Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said: “Tie your camel and
then have tawakkul in Allah”; “To leave your hairs wealthy is better than to
leave them helpless asking people for their needs”; “Love your brothers as
you love yourself”, and that “Believers support one-another”
The system of mutual help in Islamic culture can be traced back to some pre-
Islam historical systems including, inter alia, al-nahd (ده
ف
لن)ا (partnership in the
provisions on mutual cooperation basis), al-`aqilah ()العاقلة (kinsmen paying
blood money to the heirs of the murdered), etc [fordetails, see JIBM, Vol.4,
No. 1). Islam accepted such arrangements of mutual help and mitigating the
impact of harms and losses to human being or the assets as is evident from
hadith of al-'ash`ariyyin ( دحيفاألرعشي ) according to which the Holy Prophet
(PBUH) paid tribute to his 'ash`ari companions who put forward a mutual help
concept and practiced it in their life as explained by Imam Nawavi ( رشحاونلويىلع
حصملسم 16/62 :).
For the purpose of maximum inclusion, the security, risk mitigation and future
needs related plans, both in formal and informal structures, may be for one to
20 years and may start as low as Rs.1,000/ month with payment options.
