In this sermon we explore Jesus' miracle of walking on water. We will see how he compelled the disciples to go ahead of Him in a boat, and then how he used this as an opportunity to show them His glory. We will also explore how Jesus first dismissed the crowds to get alone with His Father, and we will consider our unique 21st century challenge. How do we dismiss the crowds when we are constantly carrying our crowds with us?

Mk 6:45-52 NABRE Mt 14:22-23 NABRE 45 Then he made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the mountain to pray. 47 When it was evening, the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore. 48 Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them. 49 But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out. 50They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” 51 He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were [completely] astounded. 52 They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened. 22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. 27 At once [Jesus] spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Mk 9:2-10 NABRE Mt 17:1-3 NABRE 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. 4 Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. 7 Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. THE CAUSE AND CALM FOR THE STORM Nah 1:3 Dan 7:1-3 I. THE SELF-INFLICTED STORM JONAH Jonah 1:4, 12, 15 This storm was Jonah’s fault, and he knew it. The only thing for him to do was simply “take his medicine.” II. THE SATANIC STORM JESUS ASLEEP ON THE SEA OF GALILEE Matt 8:24-27 The disciples had Jesus in the ship, yet the storm still threatened them. I believe the cause of this storm was satanic oppression. Notice what happens when they get to the other side. Matt 8:28 When the storm is Satanic in origin the thing to do is, heed Christ warning: Resist fear and exercise faith. III. THE SAVIOR’S STORM JESUS IS ABSENT IN THE STORM. Mark 6:46-52 This time it appears the storm is Jesus’ fault. When that thought comes to mind there is something to learn. We don’t all learn the same lesson from the same storm. Here most of the disciples had to learn the miracle worker who could multiply bread and fish would also enable them to accomplish what he told them to do. But for Peter, a special lesson was to be learned. Matt 14:27-29 Peter learned it is possible to get closer to Jesus in the storm; he just didn’t remember the lesson about resisting fear and exercising faith, after a few steps. IV. THE SKEPTIC’S STORM PAUL AND EUROCLYDON Acts 27:10-11, 14, 21 This storm is to be blamed on the unbelievers. “I told you so”. Acts 27:24 Acts 27:44 The answer for this storm was for Paul to be an ambassador of hope. CONCLUSION- At some point, you will experience one or all four of these storms. Ps 55:8, 16-17 What I may see for you as a storm on the sea of Galilee, you may feel is the Garden of Gethsemane. But in either case, our God is the God of “everlasting consolation and good hope”, remember- “his way [is] in the whirlwind and in the storm.” He has promised he will perform his good work in you until the day of Jesus Christ. Rev 7:1-3 Sometimes He calms the storm. With a whispered peace be still He can settle any sea But it doesn't mean He will. Sometimes He holds us close, And lets the wind and waves go wild, Sometimes He calms the storm, And other times He calms His child

"An elderly German man who lived through the Holocaust tells the following story: I always considered myself a Christian. I attended a church since I was a small boy. We had heard the stories of what was happening to the Jews; but like most people in America today, we tried to distance ourselves from the reality of what was really taking place. What could anyone do to stop it? A railroad track ran behind our small church, and each Sunday morning we would hear the whistle from a distance and then the clacking of the wheels moving over the track. We became disturbed when one Sunday we heard cries coming from the train as it passed by. We grimly realized that the train was carrying Jews. Week after week that train whistle would blow. We would dread to hear the sound of those old wheels because we knew that the Jews would begin to cry out to us as they passed our church. It was so terribly disturbing! We could do nothing to help these poor people, yet their screams tormented us. We knew exactly at what time that whistle would blow, and we decided the only way to keep from being so disturbed by the cries was to start singing our hymns. It some of the screams reached our ears, we'd just sing a little louder until we could hear them no more. Years have passed, and no one talks about it much any more; but I still hear that train whistle in my sleep. I can still hear them crying out for help. God forgive all of us who called ourselves Christians, yet did nothing to intervene."
