Teddy Roosevelt selected William Howard Taft as his successor in the 1908 election. Taft defeated William Jennings Bryan for the third time. However, Taft upset Roosevelt with his policies regarding oil drilling in Alaska, dollar diplomacy instead of Roosevelt's big stick approach, inconsistent tariffs, and replacing Roosevelt's cabinet members. This caused Roosevelt to run against Taft in the 1912 election as the third party Bull Moose candidate, splitting the Republican vote and allowing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win the presidency.
