actionorganisationsandbalance myresearch,ratherthanresearchingone organisationand
endingupwithone-sidedandheavilymisrepresentingresults.Thisvarietyof artefactsallowsme
to forma strongerdiversifiedfinalopinion aswell astocompare differenttechniquesand
approachesto campaignsforchange,notingdifferencesintheirmessage,presentationand
intendedaudience.
What kindsof artefactsare youexpectingtolookat?
The range of artefactsthat will be researchedforthisprojectincludesdifferentsocial action
organizationsthatrunsimilarcampaignstowhatthe SASishopingto achieve.Thisincludes
campaignsthat are aimingto improve the environmentaroundcoastal areas,orin broadertermsa
groupthat is tryingto improve litterstandardsacrossthe entiretyof the UnitedKingdom, eitherby
callingforheaviersanctionsforlitteringorbycleaninguplitterthemselveswithteamsof
volunteers. Inparticular,I will be lookingatenvironmental charities likethe WWF, whoare looking
to improve standardsacrossthe countryor bancertain proceduresthatharm wildlife.Aswell as
this,I will be lookingatarange of differentmediumsusedbybothSASandother similarcharities,
such as campaignmaterials,merchandisingandleafletsinordertoestablishbrandidentity
betweeneachdifferentformatandhow itcan contribute toraisingawarenessforthe campaigns.
What elementswill youlook attohelpyouwithyourresearch?
The elementsIwill lookatformy researchincludeshow theseexistingorganizationsoperate,such
as what formatsof mediatheyincorporate tocommunicate withthe public,andthe contentthey
use for these advertisements.Iwill alsolook atthe activitiesthatthe groupundertakesandhow
theygo aboutthem,whetherornot theyreceive supportfromthe governmentfortheiractionsor
if theyare an independentgroupthatusesvolunteerstoaccomplishthings. Iwill alsobe lookingat
howthese groupseffectivelyuse colour,fontsandvisual layoutstoputacross a specificmessage
or appeal to a certainmarket.Thiswill aidme inthe conceptand planningstage where Ican think
aboutcertaincoloursand fontsto put acrossa specificmessage,moodorthought.
Considerations:
Why mightyouneedtobe sensitive whencarryingoutresearch onsocial actionissues?
Sensitivityisneededwhenresearchingsocial issuesbecause manycausesare dedicatedtohelping
people whoare otherwisedisadvantagedordonothave the same rightsas others,meaningthat
theysufferdiscriminationorprosecutionforwhotheyare.Otherorganizationsmaybe dedicated
to helpingpeople whoare physically/mentallydisabled,therefore itisimportanttoensure that
due care isgivenwhenresearchingsuchorganizationsandthatyoudo not intrude onanyone’s
privacyor cause upset.
Couldyouface any problems whentryingto researchsocial actionissues?If so,isthere away to
overcome these?
The problemsthatmightbe encounteredduringthe researchprocessinclude the factthatsome
organizationsmightnotbe as willingtoshare theirinformationasothers, whichwouldmake it
hard to conductresearchintothat particularorganization. Thisisperhapsbecause some of their
informationmaybe sensitive orprivate,particularlyif the charitydealswithpatientsorother
sensitiveindividuals. Toovercome this,we canlookintoa differentorganizationthatismore open
aboutwhat theydo andwhat theytry andfightfor.
Where wouldyouexpectyourfinishedpiecestobe displayedanddistributed?
WhenI complete mypiecesforthissocial actioncampaignIcan expectthemtobe displayedin
coastal areas that sufferahigherlevel of waste andlitter,asthe presence of agroupthat is
combatingsucha problemwill likelystrengthentheirtieswiththe local community.Ican also
expectthe material producedby ourcampaignto be publishedaroundthe country,helping
ordinarypeople knowaboutthe problemsthatthe coastline facesandwhattheyas a personcan
do to help. Inparticular,placeswithalotof pedestriantrafficsuchas shoppingcentres,railway
stationsandcommunitycentreswill alsohelptoinspire like-mindedpeopletojoinSASinits
efforts.
What fundingissues mightanorganisationlike SurfersAgainstSewage (SAS) face?
Issuesthatmay arise include the factthattheirwork isentirelyvoluntary,inthattheyare notpaid
for whattheydo bythe governmentorthe public.Thismeansthatthe SAShas to turn to events
such as fundraisingandcharityinorderto raise the moneyneededtoprinttheirleafletsand
posters,aswell asfundthe work theydofor the environment. Because SASisanon-profit
organizationtheymustrelyontheiradvertisingandwordof mouthto spreadawarenessabout
theircampaign,whichwill entice more people aroundthe countrytojointheireffortsand
hopefullydonate tofundtheiradvertisingandcleanupcampaigns.Showingthattheyhave good
intentionsandare genuinelyhelpingthe environmentwill inspirebenefactorstofinance the
charityand may evenleadtograntsfrom the governmenttocontinue itsefforts.

What kindsof artefactsare youexpectingtolookat? The range of artefactsthat will be researchedforthisprojectincludesdifferentsocial action organizationsthatrunsimilarcampaignstowhatthe SASishopingto achieve.Thisincludes campaignsthat are aimingto improve the environmentaroundcoastal areas,orin broadertermsa groupthat is tryingto improve litterstandardsacrossthe entiretyof the UnitedKingdom, eitherby callingforheaviersanctionsforlitteringorbycleaninguplitterthemselveswithteamsof volunteers. Inparticular,I will be lookingatenvironmental charities likethe WWF, whoare looking to improve standardsacrossthe countryor bancertain proceduresthatharm wildlife.Aswell as this,I will be lookingatarange of differentmediumsusedbybothSASandother similarcharities, such as campaignmaterials,merchandisingandleafletsinordertoestablishbrandidentity betweeneachdifferentformatandhow itcan contribute toraisingawarenessforthe campaigns. What elementswill youlook attohelpyouwithyourresearch? The elementsIwill lookatformy researchincludeshow theseexistingorganizationsoperate,such as what formatsof mediatheyincorporate tocommunicate withthe public,andthe contentthey use for these advertisements.Iwill alsolook atthe activitiesthatthe groupundertakesandhow theygo aboutthem,whetherornot theyreceive supportfromthe governmentfortheiractionsor if theyare an independentgroupthatusesvolunteerstoaccomplishthings. Iwill alsobe lookingat howthese groupseffectivelyuse colour,fontsandvisual layoutstoputacross a specificmessage or appeal to a certainmarket.Thiswill aidme inthe conceptand planningstage where Ican think aboutcertaincoloursand fontsto put acrossa specificmessage,moodorthought. Considerations: Why mightyouneedtobe sensitive whencarryingoutresearch onsocial actionissues?
