This document provides tips for using "magic statements" to prevent, minimize, or de-escalate conflicts with children who have autism spectrum disorders. The magic statements give simple, practical language responses for situations like withdrawing a positive consequence, interrupting disruptive behavior, validating a child's desires when saying no, declining inappropriate suggestions, transferring responsibility to find solutions, affirming agreements, and disengaging from heated discussions. Examples of magic statements include "We'll try again later", "This isn't working", and "Can you think of a solution that will work for both of us?".

How to Say Yes to Self-Service in the Cloud and Become an IT HeroRightScale
We’ve all seen the trend: your internal customers, developers, and business users alike, want self-service access to IT resources they need. And increasingly they want those resources in the cloud via a single management console. Cloud computing offers them the agility they need to respond to market demands and the ability to scale up while keeping costs low.
IT can become a hero by providing a self-service portal where internal customers can provision their own cloud resources while IT can maintain the control and visibility an enterprise requires. The happy result: enterprise agility and enterprise control.
During this session, learn how to empower your internal customers to provision the necessary cloud resources when they need them but also ensure that they are well within IT approved guidelines.
To help illustrate the effectiveness of this approach, our presenters walk you through real-world examples and the overall impact on their organizations.
1. Create an IT vending machine with consistent and reproducible processes.
2. Manage multiple IT environments through a single-pane-of-glass.
3. Use cost planning and forecasting to fine-tune and understand cloud spend.
4. Discover reporting and auditing tools to ensure compliance.

We have emphasized that a parent’s injunction cannot make the child write her script in a particular way. It is the child who decides what to do with the injunction she receives.
Nurture Assertiveness in Children - Prep for a better future.pdfPoojaSubramanian1
Start nurturing assertiveness in yourself and your kids today. Assertiveness is a communication skill. Like any other skill it gets better with practice. Generally it gets confused with aggressiveness, but it is different and useful, unlike aggressiveness. Every human at any stage of life needs assertiveness to lead a happy and fulfilling life. Be your child’s guide in this process of nurturance and growth. Hold their little hands and help them prosper.

Inappropriate Methods That Deter Cooperation
Method Example
Blaming and
accusing
“Look at the dirty footprints you put on my clean kitchen floor. You never
consider how hard I work.”
Name-calling “You are the sloppiest person, just look at your room!”
Threats “If you don’t start doing your share around here, I’m going to cut your
allowance.”
Commands “Take the garbage out this minute, and no back talk, young man.”
Lecturing and
moralizing
“Now, do you think that was a nice thing to say about your friend? You
should learn to treat your friends the way you want to be treated.”
Warnings “Don’t step off the sidewalk. You’ll get hit by a car.”
Martyrdom “Why are you doing this to me, hard as I work?”
Comparisons “Why can’t you try as hard in school as your sister does?”
Sarcasm “You knew you had to get up early, but you were so smart and stayed up
until midnight.”
Prophecy “If you continue in the same manner, you’ll never amount to anything.”
Skills for Engaging Cooperation
Skill Example
Describe what you
see or the problem
“Your dirty clothes are on the floor in your room.”
Give information “The battery in the flashlight will last longer when you turn it off after each
use.”
Say it with a word. (when milk is left out of the refrigerator) “Susie, the milk.”
Talk about your
feelings
“I am frustrated because you are making so much noise that I can’t hear
your father on the telephone.”
Wrote a note (taped to basket of clean laundry) “Marlin, please fold me.”

Positive Guidance
Children are more likely to respond to positive statements than negative ones. Rewrite each
statement below so it tells the child what he or she is expected to do.
1. “Don’t put the scissors on the floor.”
2. “Don’t spill your milk.”
3. “Don’t walk in front of the slide.”
4. “You’re pouring too fast.”
5. “Don’t walk so slowly.”
6. “Don’t touch all of the muffins.”

15 Techniques to use with children which invite cooperation
1. Give children valid, appropriate and limited choices. Limit use of commands. Offering options gives
the child a sense of empowerment. This works especially well with children who are strong willed and
in need of a great deal of control. Giving choices eliminates power struggles and “NO” answers.
ie: Do you want your milk poured into the green cup or the blue cup?
ie: You may walk to get your diaper changed or I can carry you. (either way, the diaper is getting
changed).
ie: Say “It’s naptime” rather than “Do you want to take a nap?” which offers the ch.

Guided Response:
Respond to one peer in this Discussion Forum. Read the challenging behavior scenario they have created and use the Developmental Discipline guidance strategy to problem solve. You must include the following in your response: child’s name, how you will approach the child, possible reminder or private sign, describe how you provide time and space, an example of self-talk that can help the child problem solve, and a choice you can offer the child. Additionally, can you use humor to defuse the situation? If so, how? If not, why?
My post:
Collaborative problem solving is one of the guidance strategies to address challenging behaviors. This strategy is based on the notion that a child does not just behave undesirably. There must be a reason for such behavior. Thus, understanding why the child is having a challenging behavior is the start towards addressing this behavior (Schaubman, Stetson, & Plog, 2011). The focus is on building skills like problem-solving, flexibility, and frustration tolerance rather than motivation the child to behave better. Surprisingly, children with challenging behaviors do not lack the will to behave in a desired manner. Simply, they do not have the skills necessary to behave in a desired manner. This information is vital to addressing challenging behaviors among children in the future. This would be achieved through identifying the challenging behaviors, skills needed to address the behaviors, and partnering with the child to build these needed skills (
Kaiser & Sklar Rasminsky, 2017
). This strategy would help address Olivia’s disruptive behavior, impulsivity and addressing peers negatively. Reward and punishment may not work on Olivia. Thus, Olivia needs to develop skills to address her behaviors (Schaubman et al., 2011). One of the skills to develop is social skills to enable her to control her impulsivity, connect with others, and relate with her peers positively. Apart from this strategy, time-out or time-away would address Olivia’s challenging behaviors. A scenario portraying Olivia’s challenging behavior is her inability to wait for her turn during a group activity. She is always blurting out answers before her turn arrives. How can this be solved?

Magic Statements
A simple, practical way to use language to prevent, minimize or de-escalate
conflicts with your child.
• “We’ll try again later.”
For times when you withdraw a positive consequence (ask kids to sit somewhere else, stop reading the story).
This keeps the door open for kids to try again and make better choices at a later time.
• “This isn’t working.”
An excellent way to interrupt disruptive or off-task behavior without attacking or criticizing.
• “I know you wish you could…”
Validates your child’s desire to do something (stay up later, eat dessert, go to a friend’s house) when that
option is not available or not negotiable.
• “That won’t work for me right now.”
A simple, non-attacking way to decline your child’s suggestion when they propose something inappropriate or not
possible. You can validate the worth of the proposal (“Interesting idea” or “Oh, that does sound like it would be
fun”) and, if appropriate, even offer to look for opportunities to try that in the future.
• “Can you think of a solution that will work for both of us?”
Transfers responsibility to a dissatisfied child to find a solution that will work for him and for you (and not
become a problem for anyone else).
• “Can you live with that?”
A way to affirm your child’ commitment after you have come to an agreement.
• “We don’t say that here.”
Non-attacking response to hurtful or offensive language.
• “We don’t need to talk about that.”
A way to disengage from heated or toxic interchanges.
