 Struggling in mathematics is not the enemy, any more than sweating is the enemy in basketball;
it is part of the process, and a clear sign of being in the game.

What is this course?
Calculus AB is an AP level math class that is equivalent to Calculus I at most colleges and
universities. The exam includes the following topics:
                Functions, limits, continuity
Derivatives, graphs of derivatives, application of derivatives
Integrals, application of integrals, fundamental theorem of calculus

About the AP Exam:
The AP exam is given in May, and it consists of 2 sections:
Section I contains 45 multiple choice questions with 105 minutes
Section II contains 6 free response questions with 90 minutes.

Each section is broken into two more parts:
Part A (Section I)- 28 questions, no calculator allowed (55 minutes)
Part B (Section I)- 17 questions, calculator allowed (50 minutes)
Part A (Section II)- 2 questions, calculator allowed
Part B (Section II)- 4 questions, no calculator allowed

The exam grades are given on a 5-point scale with 5 being the highest grade. The grades are
described below:
               5- Extremely well qualified
               4- Well qualified
               3- Qualified
               2- Possibly qualified
               1- No recommendation

A TI- 89 graphing calculator is required for this class. You may sign one out from the school. I
suggest you use a binder for this class as we will use packets and not a textbook.
Class Grades:
Quarter averages are determined as follows:

Homework is assigned as needed and specified in the chapter packets. No late homework
will be accepted without an excuse. If you are absent, you have 2 days to make up the
work. My homework policy is simple, “Do the work and get a check (2 points); don’t do it and
receive a 0.”(10% of quarter grade)

Group work is assigned as needed and specified in the chapter packets. If a student is
absent, they are exempt from this assignment; however, they have the option of doing it
and getting their work graded. (10% of quarter grade)

Quarterly Benchmark Exams.(10 % of quarter grade)

Usually there are 3 in-class tests per quarter. Since you are given the chapter outline at
the beginning of each new section, you will have a general idea when the exam will be. Tests
are given over a period of either one or two days. Calculator use will be determined before
the test. (70% of quarter grade)

Retaking Exams:
You will be allowed to retake one test per quarter. The retake test will be given within 5 days of
the original exam. You can only receive as high as a 90% on the retake exam. The higher of the 2
grades will be counted.
