For my thesis I developed a Sustainable Production Design Institute in West Hollywood Students learn to create sets while keeping the environment in mind. Take a look at this institute and let me know what you think!

2. William Cameron Menzies Institute:
Fully sustainable Production Design Institute
that teaches students how to design with the
environment in mind.
Concept: Two Realities.
Students have two goals: 1) create an alter-
nate reality on screen and, 2) insure that the
production practices involved in making this
reality, do not negatively impact our reality.
To the right is the administrative building
where students enjoy their first impression of
the school.

3. Main School Building:
Every finish, every piece of furniture, and all of the
construction for W.C,M.I. meets varying LEED credits.
(raw materials, low emissions, etc.)
All the buildings were pre-existing film studios that
have been converted.
Featured are a drafting room and the small screen-
ing/ lecture rooms that become one large room with
the use of a vertical wall system.

4. The Library:
The library is comprised of 3 famous library film
sets from StarWars Episode II:Attack ofthe Clones,
Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Harry Potter Series.
Students research for their own projects amongst
highly successful real sets, putting them in a cre-
ative and inspiring atmosphere.
The entire building is ADA compliant and most of
the walls shown are pre-existing.

5. The Production Workshop:
This workshop is an open space for the students to
build their sets.
Students must build sets made from materials that
can easily be taken apart and recycled and/or re-
plenish the stock areas shown in the floorplan.
There was minimal demolition waste, as most walls
seen in the floorplan to the right are existing. The
only added walls are the dividers between stock
areas. (paper, wood, metal, etc.)
The above rendering shows the use of solatubes
used to bring natural light into the space with no
pre-existing windows along the exterior.
