2. INTRODUCTION
Surfactant are used to reduced the surface
tension in a liquid in which it is dissolved.
There are two distinct regions in their chemical structure:
HYDROPHILIC (water liking)
HYDROPHOBIC(water hating)
Tailhead

3. SURFACE ACTIVE AGENT
Molecules contains polar and non-polar portions
called surface active agent/surfactant.
Surfactant interact with both the polar and non-
polar molecules
An aggregate of molecules in a colloidal solution
called micelle
The critical micelle concentration (CMC) is defined as
the concentration of surfactants above
which micelles form and all additional surfactants
added to the system go to micelles.

 ANIONIC:(Sulfate, sulfonate, and phosphate and
carboxylates)
 Cationic:(Alkyltrimethylammonium salts:Cetyimethyl
ammonium bromide (CTAB) & Cetytrimethyl
ammonium chloride (CTAC))
 ZWITTER ION:(amino acid , imino acid , betanides )
polyoxypropyleneglycol)
Ionic: Carry a charge in its head.
NON-IONIC: Does not carry any charge in its head.
(fatty alcohol , polyoxyethylene glycol , etc)

7. APPLICATION
Surfactant play an important role as:
Wetting
Cleaning
Dispersing
Emulsifying
Foaming & anti foaming agents etc.
These are used in many practical applications &
products: Cosmetic , detergent , emulsion , insecticides,
ink etc.
