All students are required to read a total of two novels and write one ESSAY on EACH. The assignments will be due the
FIRST WEEK of school and submitted to their English teacher.

Use the following paragraph guides to complete yourfiction ESSAY(S):
1. The title and the author of the book should appear as a heading at the top of the page.
2. The first sentence should include the title of the book, the author’s name, and the central idea.
3. Interest your readers by including a striking statement or a quotation from the book or one of the characters.
Paragraph 1
Introduction/general information about the book, include “Title”, Author, type of book (fantasy, humor, mystery, non-
fiction, etc.)
Paragraph 2
Main Character
Describe the character. Answer these 3 questions:
1. The main character changes from ____ to ____ by the end of the story.
2. The main character does the right thing when...
3. I can identify with the character when…or I couldn’t identify with the character because …
Paragraph 3
Other Characters
List 2 other characters and include similar details.
Paragraph 4
Setting
Describe the time and place of the story. Include comments about the setting - examples: setting enhances the novel
because it highlights character’s feelings, makes story exciting, setting has an important effect on the main character,
setting increased my knowledge about something.
Paragraph 5
Theme
What is the author trying to say in this story? What is his or her lesson in life? Is there a moral to this story? This is a
story about ____ (examples: courage, working hard, doing the right thing, greed, love, sadness, etc.). What did you learn
from this book? State a problem in the story and how it was solved.
Paragraph 6
Plot: The Action/Summary of what happened in the story.
List up to six events that happened in the story, keep them in order.
Paragraph 7
Evaluation of the Book
Answer these questions:
1. How did the book enhance/expand your knowledge?
2. What did you like and not like about the book?
3. Was the story confusing or hard to believe?
4. Was it predictable? Realistic?
5. The ending was _____.

statements.
