During a 6-week summer research project, the author investigated using titania-coated beads and UV light to break down the harmful contaminant siloxane from biogas into harmless materials. The author learned about titania and its applications as a photocatalyst by researching academic journals. Experiments were conducted to test different coating techniques and evaluate the efficiency of the titania coating at degrading siloxane using a photo-reactor and IR spectroscopy. The author gained skills in laboratory techniques, computational analysis, and effective communication through participating in the research project.
