When I SUMMARIZE, I…
1)Find the Topic or Main Idea- look for what
words or ideas that are repeated over and over
2)Pull out 3-4 important details ( from beginning,
middle, end) that tell about the main idea-use your
own words!
3)Keep it SHORT! Do NOT repeat, do NOT copy
the words exactly from the selection

Summarize = Topic + Verb + Supporting Details
A summary is a short statement that tells the main
points about a piece of text.
Who or What is the Topic?
Ask yourself—
Who or What is this mostly about?

Look for topics that are repeated.

Look at the title.
