•. It has brought major social–economic changes in the rural area.
• sugar industry is the second largest agro-based industry in India.
• There are 509 sugar mills in India. Co-operative sector has 285
mills and private sector has 150 mills. Public sector boasts of
around 74 mills.
• The Sugar Industry in Karnataka has around 41 sugar factories
which are distributed all over the state.
• The Sugar Industry in Karnataka contributes around 36 crore per
year to the central excise duty.
