This document discusses submarine pipelines and factors related to their design and installation. It provides details on:
- Typical views of submarine pipeline installation processes like laying, buoyancy control, and collar installation.
- Forces acting on submarine pipelines like buried, elevated, and surface laid configurations. Methods to stabilize exposed and buried submarine pipelines.
- Soil properties of four coastal soil types in Kuwait that are relevant for submarine pipeline design.
- Experimental study on the effect of relative burial depth on force coefficients for submarine pipelines in different soils under waves.
- Conclusions that horizontal forces reduce with increased burial depth while vertical forces increase up to a certain depth, and high permeability soils are better for partial burial of

On bottom stability design of submarine pipelinesMintu Choudhury
This document provides guidance on the on-bottom stability design of submarine pipelines subjected to wave and current loading. It outlines three design methods: 1) a dynamic lateral stability analysis using time-domain simulation, 2) a generalized lateral stability method based on allowable displacement from a design wave spectrum, and 3) an absolute lateral static stability method ensuring stability for a single extreme wave oscillation. Safety factors are used to establish a target failure probability for lateral displacement as a serviceability limit state. Load combinations are defined for characteristic and temporary conditions based on return periods. Guidance is given on weight and resistance calculations, and a displacement design criterion of 10 pipe diameters is recommended.

Abdullah Al Dossary - Length Maximization of Scrapable Pipeline SegmentRamy Saboungui
This study aimed to determine the maximum length of pipeline segments that can be used without intermediate scraper handling facilities based on industry experience. A questionnaire was used to collect data from pipeline operators on segment lengths, problems encountered, internal coating use, and potential cost savings from eliminating intermediate facilities. The results found that 27% of surveyed pipelines had segments over 500km without intermediate facilities and lengths ranged widely. Operators did not report problems with longer segments. Establishing guidelines for optimal segment lengths could reduce costs and risks.

Nader Al Otaibi - Managing SCC in Gas PipelinesRamy Saboungui
This document discusses stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in gas pipelines and strategies for managing it. SCC occurs due to the combined effect of a corrosive environment, a susceptible material, and applied stress. It can develop in older pipelines without causing significant metal loss. The document outlines Saudi Aramco's large pipeline network and techniques for predicting and assessing SCC, including in-line inspections and the EMAT technology. It also presents a case study of revalidating a 40" gas pipeline segment through verification digging and failure analysis. Strategies discussed for tackling SCC include optimizing assessment criteria, employing new coating technologies, and taking actions based on crack classification.
This document discusses Omnisens' DITEST system for distributed fiber optic leak detection. It summarizes that DITEST uses a single laser source and Brillouin scattering techniques to monitor thousands of locations along a single optical fiber with high sensitivity. DITEST offers long-range monitoring over 50km with 1m spatial resolution and temperature/strain measurement resolution of 0.5°C and 10mε. It provides continuous, real-time leak detection along pipelines with quick response times and no false alarms. DITEST is presented as offering significant advantages over alternative leak detection methods through its stability, sensitivity, scalability and lack of ongoing operational costs.

Effect of relative burial depth of
submarine pipeline on upward
force coefficients for four different
soil types (Hi/d=0.666, d/L=0.074).
35. Conclusions
For all the four soil types, the horizontal force reduced
nonlinearly with increase in depth of burial; whereas,
the vertical force generally increases up to certain
depth of burial, mainly due to the significant change in
the magnitude as well as the phase difference between
the dynamic pressures in the vertical direction.
36. Conclusions
Among the soils, well graded and high hydraulic
conductivity soil (Shuaiba soil with k=1.84 mm/s) is
good for half burial of the submarine pipeline, since
the least vertical force occurred for this soil. On the
other hand, uniformly graded and low hydraulic
conductivity soil (Al-Koot soil with k=0.286 mm/s)
attracts the maximum vertical force for half burial. On
the other hand, this type of soil is good for full burial
or further increase of burial, since it attracts less
vertical force when compared to the other soils.
37. Conclusions
In general, if the hydraulic conductivity is high (order
of 1.84 mm/s), then varying the burial from e/D=0.5 to
1.0 or 1.5 does not provide any advantage from vertical
stability point of view, since the vertical forces are of
the same order from e/D=0.5 to 1.5. On the other
hand, for a soil with low hydraulic conductivity (Order
of 0.29 mm/s), changing the burial from e/D=0.5 to 1.5
could reduce the force more than 50%.
38. Conclusions
In general, the horizontal wave force dictates the
stability of the submarine pipeline, if the pipeline is
placed on the sea floor since the highest horizontal
force occurs when the pipe is not buried.
For buried pipeline, the horizontal force is not the
main issue for stability due to significant force
reduction. For the buried pipeline, the upward wave
force mainly dictates the stability of the pipeline.
