Using Marketing Channels and Price to
Create Value for Customers
Sometimes when you buy a good or service, it passes straight from the producer to you. But
suppose every time you purchased something, you had to contact its maker? For some products or
services, such as a haircut, this would work. But what about the items you purchase at the grocery
store? You couldn't begin to contact and buy from all the makers of those products. It would be an
incredibly inefficient way to do business.
Fortunately, companies partner with one another, alleviating you of this burden. So, for example,
instead of Procter & Gamble selling individual toothbrushes to consumers, it sells many of them
to stores, which then sell them to everyone.
The specific avenue a seller uses to make a finished good or service available for purchase—for
example, whether you are able to buy it directly from the seller, at a store, online, or from a
salesperson—is referred to as the product's marketing channel (or distribution channel). All of
the people and organizations that buy, resell, and promote the product "downstream" as it makes
its way to you are part of the marketing channel.
Likewise, price creates value for customers and is the way the company makes its revenue and
profit by exchanging value with the customer. When Chick-fil-A opens new locations, the
company offers the first 100 customers a free meal every week for a year. Customers camp out
overnight to get in line for the free meals. When KFC introduced its grilled chicken, the company
put coupons good for a free piece of chicken in many Sunday newspapers.
So how do sellers make any money if they always offer goods and services on sale or for a special
deal? Many sellers give customers something for free, hoping they'll buy other products, but a
careful balance is needed to ensure profit.
Price is the only marketing mix variable or part of the offering that generates revenue. Buyers
relate the price to value. They must feel they are getting value for the price paid. Pricing decisions
are extremely important. So how do organizations decide how to price their goods and services?
This week, we explore both distribution and price as a means to add value for customers.

“Subsea pipelines connectors”
Subsea pipeline are very popular around the world. Almost every water body has a pipeline, whether it is to transport distilled or spring water, or for gas, or for crude oil. Pipeline with great lengths are broken into segments, and has a connector between each segment; such a methodology are used to control damage and makes it easier for manufacturing and maintenance. However, theses devices are not perfect, and have different aspects that need to be considered when choosing one. Aspects are such as: pressure drop, installment, repair, and material used.
Different types of subsea pipeline connectors are being developed and used everyday in different parts of the world. Manufacturers are racing to be ahead of the technological advancement and rule the market. Starting with a fundamental article about the advancement and the market availability of subsea pipeline connectors back in 1976 to the current technology, this paper will review the literature materials of the present solutions of subsea pipeline connectors. This fundamental article written by H. Mohr discusses the available subsea pipe connectors back in 1976[1]. The article offers solution that is applicable for a specific period of time, but when the technology of its time period is expired and new solutions are offered the article would hardly be discussed anymore, which actually made it impossible to find online or in nearby library. However, in general, the solutions offered and the way there were discussed are actually very relatable to this paper.
The paper lays on the three major methods of connections, then goes on to examine the current commercial product at that time. Three methods mentioned are the basic welding, elastomeric connectors, and advanced engineered horizontal systems. H. Mohr then moves to the market demand of the three methods, and two methods only were discussed, welding and mechanical connectors.

Information and society
Since the advent of easy access to the internet and the World Wide Web, society has a different attitude towards information and access to information. The technology changes – from slow desk-tops with dial-up access to smartphones – have also changed our interaction with information.
This is also an area in which generational differences show up. Those of us born before the mid1980s or 1990s have followed all of these changes and have had to adapt to it. For those born in the 1990s (the millennials or digital natives), these methods of getting information have always existed. The millenials have seen some of the technology changes but don’t remember the “old” way. Keep this in mind as you read these notes.
An information society
At the beginning of the semester we talked about the many different ways we get information and the definitions of information. Now we’re going to look more at how information and information technologies have changed society.
Lester and Koehler talk about defining an information society in economic sense. While this is important, I don’t think we need to look at the percentage of our GNP to see that we do live in an information society. Think of all the companies that are based on information – computer technologies, web based businesses, cell phone and technologies, GPS, etc. There are also jobs that rely on information – customer service, stock markets, etc.

The following are the countries I have keenly analysed as potential hosts for the manufacturing site of Spring Clean Products. These are China and Singapore.
Fundamental information on China
China is among the worlds top leading exporters of a wide array of commodities . it therefore receives significant amounts of foreign investment.
It has a per capita per person of $9844. This is relatively high given the high population in the country.
It is a member of WTO (World Trade Organization) hence the country enjoys enormous benefits due to access to foreign markets. However, its relations with other trading partners is a matter of concern given the high surplus trade and piracy levels.
China has devalued its currency which result in goods being extremely cheap for foreign buyers therefore encouraging export.
The country enjoys a stable political environment.
China and India have a combined population of 2.3 billion people, about 37 percent of world's total. A 100 dollar increase in the per capita income of these two countries would translate into about 230 billion dollars in additional demand for commodities.

It has a sizeable middle class. The country has a GDP per capita income of US dollars 4000.
India receives high foreign direct investments and its now home to globally recognized companies especially I n the pharmaceutical and steel sector.
The country is the largest democracy in the world and has enjoyed political stability
India in its sixty five years of independence, it has witnessed a landmark agricultural revolution which has changed the nation from a high dependant on grain import to an agricultural powerhouse across the globe becoming a net food exporter. INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF
THE MIC LEAK
In the days following the gas leak, there was world-
wide interest in pinning down its precise cause. A
team of reporters from The New York Times inter-
viewed plant workers in Bhopal. Their six-week in-
vestigation concluded that a large volume of water
entered tank 610, causing the accident.f The Times re-
porters thought that water had entered when R. Khan
failed to use a slip blind as he washed out piping.
Water from his hose simply backed up and eventually
flowed about 400 feet into the tank. Their account was
widely circulated and this theory, called the "water
washing theory," gained currency. However, it was
not to be the only theory of the accident's cause.
Immediately after the disaster, Union Carbide also
rushed a team of investigators to Bhopal. But the
team got little cooperation from Indian authorities
operating in a climate of anti-Carbide popular pro-
test. It was denied access to plant records and work-
ers. Yet the investigators got to look at tank 610 and
took core samples from its bottom residue. These
samples went back to the United States, where more
than 500 experimental chemical reactions were un-
dertaken to explain their chemical composition. In
March 1985 Carbide finally released its report. It
stated that entry of water into the tank caused the gas
release, but it rejected the water washing theory.
Instead, Carbide scientists felt the only way that
an amount of water sufficient to cause the observed
reaction could have entered the tank was through ac-
cidental or deliberate connection of a water hose to
piping th.

Around 1911 to 1913, a Dutch astronomer named Ejnar Hertzsprung and an American astronomer Henry Norris Russell created a diagram of stars plotted using only their luminosity and their spectral types. A star’s spectral type is determined by the absorption lines found in its spectrum. Hertzsprung and Russell noticed that the spectra were related to the stars’ color and temperature. Their diagram, named the Hertzsprung-Russell, or H-R, diagram in their honor, has been like a Rosetta Stone to stellar astronomy.

The spectral types are subdivided into 10 subgroups which are labeled 0 through 9. Stars are further grouped by their luminosity, which is denoted by a Roman numeral.

The original H-R diagram plotted the star’s luminosity versus its spectral type. It only included stars within 100 pc of the Sun as that was the limit for determining distances using the helio-centric parallax method, the only known method at the time.
Since then, the H-R diagram has come to represent more than just the luminosity of a star versus its spectral type as it can be used to glean more information than just that. For one, luminosity and absolute magnitude are related. It is easy to see where different groups of stars, like main sequence, red giants, et cetera, are grouped on the diagram. Temperature and thus color information can also be found, as well as radius size. We can determine the mass of main sequence stars by using the diagram. We can also determine the distance to stars by plotting them on the H-R diagram. Other characteristics, including stellar densities, spectral lines, stellar life times, stellar interiors, types of nuclear processes taking place within the star, and interior temperatures can also be discovered.
Part II: Procedure
Section 1: Luminosity
Review/Go over solar luminosity as it relates to absolute magnitude. (See textbook section 15.1 Properties of Stars and Mathematical Insight 15.3.) Remember that for every change of 5 magnitudes, the luminosity changes by 100. So a star with an absolute magnitude of 10 will be 100 times more luminous than a star with an absolute magnitude of 15. (For a review on logarithms, see page 4 of this lab packet.) Note: the following graphing instructions are specifically for Excel 2003®; other products/Excel versions may have different instructions.

Once complete, begin section 3 of this lab. Plot all the stars listed in “Table 1: Bright Stars” on page.

hings are humming along,
and then: A top client calls
and says, “We’re switch-
ing suppliers, starting
next month. I’m afraid
your company no longer
fi gures into our plans.” Or
three colleagues, all of
whom joined the organi-
zation around the same
time you did, are up for promotion—but you aren’t.
Or your team loses another good person in a third
round of layoff s; weak markets or no, you still need
to make your numbers, but now you’ll have to rely
heavily on two of the most uncooperative members
of the group.
So how do you react? Are you angry and disap-
pointed, ranting and raving to anyone who will lis-
ten? Do you feel dejected and victimized, resigned
to the situation even as you deny the cold reality
of it? Or do you experience a rush of excitement—
perhaps tinged with fear—because you sense an op-
portunity to develop your skills and talents in ways
you’d never imagined? The truth is, you’ve probably
reacted in all those ways when confronted with a
challenge—maybe even cycling through multiple
emotional states in the course of dealing with one
really big mess.
Whatever your initial reaction, however, the chal-
lenge is to turn a negative experience into a produc-
tive one—that is, to counter adversity with resilience.
Psychological resilience is the capacity to respond
quickly and constructively to crises. It’s a central dy-
namic in most survival stories, such as those of the
shell-shocked individuals and organizations that ral-
lied in the wake of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. But

Building the House
"We're not taking this lying down...It's a war," warns
Ken Barker, director of apparel at Adidas America
(Salter, 2005, p. 70). Baker's statement is in reference
to the rapid success in the apparel market by a young
and up-and-coming Under Armour brand. The Under
Armour brand dominates the performance apparel cat-
egory so much (with around 75% market share) that
the name has become synonymous with the product
(Salter, 2005). The consistent growth of total revenue
from $115.4 million in 2003 to $607.7 million in 2007
indicates the rapid success that Under Armour has
experienced (Think Equity Partners, 2007).
The Under Armour Company was created by Kevin
Plank, a former collegiate football player who felt he
and his teammates' needs were not being met when it
came to performance wear. Plank has taken a unique
T-shirt company and turned it into a market share
leader, and in the process he brought a fledgling and
obscure market category into the forefront of the con-
sumers' minds.
Founder Kevin Plank's passion for success could be
seen from his football days where he came in as a walk-
on fullback for the University of Maryland, and
through hard work and determination, he left as a full
scholarship athlete and captain of special teams. This
same will and determination, coupled with Plank's
work ethic, has served as the backbone of Under
Patrick Kraft, PhD, is a clinical professor of sport
management in the School of Business Administration at
the University of Loyola-Chicago. His research interests
include brand development, brand equity, marketing,
and sponsorship.
Jason W. Lee, PhD, is an assistant professor in the
Department of Leadership, Counseling and Instructional
Technology at the University of North Florida. His
research interests include socio-cultural aspects of sport,
sport branding, and the use of film as an educational tool
in sport management.
Armour during its rise to becoming one of the most
successful apparel companies of all time. The mission
of Under Armour is to make technically advanced
products that are engineered with superior fabric con-
struction, to provide proven innovation available to
the masses—aimed at making athletes perform better
(UnderArmour.com, 2008).
The modest beginnings of this young market leader
were formed out of Plank's grandmother's townhouse
in Washington D.C. It was here where Plank, along
with his good ñ îend and former Maryland lacrosse
player Kip Fulks, who eventually become the compa-
ny's Vice President of Production, started the company
with $20,000 of their own money, $40,000 from credit
and $250,000 from a small business loan ("Under
Armour performance apparel," 2004). By the end of
the company's first year, 500 Under Armour HeatGear
(sweat-resistant) shirts had been sold in various styles,
amounting to about $17,000 in sales.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

Using Marketing Channels and Price to
Create Value for Customers
Sometimes when you buy a good or service, it passes straight from the producer to you. But
suppose every time you purchased something, you had to contact its maker? For some products or
services, such as a haircut, this would work. But what about the items you purchase at the grocery
store? You couldn't begin to contact and buy from all the makers of those products. It would be an
incredibly inefficient way to do business.
Fortunately, companies partner with one another, alleviating you of this burden. So, for example,
instead of Procter & Gamble selling individual toothbrushes to consumers, it sells many of them
to stores, which then sell them to everyone.
The specific avenue a seller uses to make a finished good or service available for purchase—for
example, whether you are able to buy it directly from the seller, at a store, online, or from a
salesperson—is referred to as the product's marketing channel (or distribution channel). All of
the people and organizations that buy, resell, and promote the product "downstream" as it makes
its way to you are part of the marketing channel.
Likewise, price creates value for customers and is the way the company makes its revenue and
profit by exchanging value with the customer. When Chick-fil-A opens new locations, the
company offers the first 100 customers a free meal every week for a year. Customers camp out
overnight to get in line for the free meals. When KFC introduced its grilled chicken, the company
put coupons good for a free piece of chicken in many Sunday newspapers.
So how do sellers make any money if they always offer goods and services on sale or for a special
deal? Many sellers give customers something for free, hoping they'll buy other products, but a
careful balance is needed to ensure profit.
Price is the only marketing mix variable or part of the offering that generates revenue. Buyers
relate the price to value. They must feel they are getting value for the price paid. Pricing decisions
are extremely important. So how do organizations decide how to price their goods and services?
This week, we explore both distribution and price as a means to add value for customers.

Subsea pipeline are very popular around the world. Almost every water body has a pipeline, whether it is to transport distilled or spring water, or for gas, or for crude oil. Pipeline with great lengths are broken into segments, and has a connector between each segment; such a methodology are used to control damage and makes it easier for manufacturing and maintenance. Information and society
Since the advent of easy access to the internet and the World Wide Web, society has a different attitude towards information and access to information. The technology changes – from slow desk-tops with dial-up access to smartphones – have also changed our interaction with information.
This is also an area in which generational differences show up. Those of us born before the mid1980s or 1990s have followed all of these changes and have had to adapt to it. For those born in the 1990s (the millennials or digital natives), these methods of getting information have always existed. The millenials have seen some of the technology changes but don’t remember the “old” way. Keep this in mind as you read these notes.
An information society
At the beginning of the semester we talked about the many different ways we get information and the definitions of information. Now we’re going to look more at how information and information technologies have changed society.
Lester and Koehler talk about defining an information society in economic sense. While this is important, I don’t think we need to look at the percentage of our GNP to see that we do live in an information society. Think of all the companies that are based on information – computer technologies, web based businesses, cell phone and technologies, GPS, etc. There are also jobs that rely on information – customer service, stock markets, etc.

INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF
THE MIC LEAK
In the days following the gas leak, there was world-
wide interest in pinning down its precise cause. A
team of reporters from The New York Times inter-
viewed plant workers in Bhopal. Their six-week in-
vestigation concluded that a large volume of water
entered tank 610, causing the accident.f The Times re-
porters thought that water had entered when R. Khan
failed to use a slip blind as he washed out piping.
Water from his hose simply backed up and eventually
flowed about 400 feet into the tank. Their account was
widely circulated and this theory, called the "water
washing theory," gained currency. However, it was
not to be the only theory of the accident's cause.
Immediately after the disaster, Union Carbide also
rushed a team of investigators to Bhopal. But the
team got little cooperation from Indian authorities
operating in a climate of anti-Carbide popular pro-
test. It was denied access to plant records and work-
ers. Yet the investigators got to look at tank 610 and
took core samples from its bottom residue. These
samples went back to the United States, where more
than 500 experimental chemical reactions were un-
dertaken to explain their chemical composition. In
March 1985 Carbide finally released its report. It
stated that entry of water into the tank caused the gas
release, but it rejected the water washing theory.
Instead, Carbide scientists felt the only way that
an amount of water sufficient to cause the observed
reaction could have entered the tank was through ac-
cidental or deliberate connection of a water hose to
piping th.

H-R Diagram Lab
Part I: Introduction & Background
Around 1911 to 1913, a Dutch astronomer named Ejnar Hertzsprung and an American astronomer Henry Norris Russell created a diagram of stars plotted using only their luminosity and their spectral types. A star’s spectral type is determined by the absorption lines found in its spectrum. Hertzsprung and Russell noticed that the spectra were related to the stars’ color and temperature. Their diagram, named the Hertzsprung-Russell, or H-R, diagram in their honor, has been like a Rosetta Stone to stellar astronomy.

The spectral types are subdivided into 10 subgroups which are labeled 0 through 9. Stars are further grouped by their luminosity, which is denoted by a Roman numeral.

The original H-R diagram plotted the star’s luminosity versus its spectral type. It only included stars within 100 pc of the Sun as that was the limit for determining distances using the helio-centric parallax method, the only known method at the time.
Since then, the H-R diagram has come to represent more than just the luminosity of a star versus its spectral type as it can be used to glean more information than just that. For one, luminosity and absolute magnitude are related. It is easy to see where different groups of stars, like main sequence, red giants, et cetera, are grouped on the diagram. Temperature and thus color information can also be found, as well as radius size. We can determine the mass of main sequence stars by using the diagram. We can also determine the distance to stars by plotting them on the H-R diagram. Other characteristics, including stellar densities, spectral lines, stellar life times, stellar interiors, types of nuclear processes taking place within the star, and interior temperatures can also be discovered.
Part II: Procedure
Section 1: Luminosity
Review/Go over solar luminosity as it relates to absolute magnitude. (See textbook section 15.1 Properties of Stars and Mathematical Insight 15.3.) Remember that for every change of 5 magnitudes, the luminosity changes by 100. So a star with an absolute magnitude of 10 will be 100 times more luminous than a star with an absolute magnitude of 15. (For a review on logarithms, see page 4 of this lab packet.) Note: the following graphing instructions are specifically for Excel 2003®; other products/Excel versions may have different instructions.

hings are humming along,
and then: A top client calls
and says, “We’re switch-
ing suppliers, starting
next month. I’m afraid
your company no longer
fi gures into our plans.” Or
three colleagues, all of
whom joined the organi-
zation around the same
time you did, are up for promotion—but you aren’t.
Or your team loses another good person in a third
round of layoff s; weak markets or no, you still need
to make your numbers, but now you’ll have to rely
heavily on two of the most uncooperative members
of the group.
So how do you react? Are you angry and disap-
pointed, ranting and raving to anyone who will lis-
ten? Do you feel dejected and victimized, resigned
to the situation even as you deny the cold reality
of it? Or do you experience a rush of excitement—
perhaps tinged with fear—because you sense an op-
portunity to develop your skills and talents in ways
you’d never imagined? The truth is, you’ve probably
reacted in all those ways when confronted with a
challenge—maybe even cycling through multiple
emotional states in the course of dealing with one
really big mess.
Whatever your initial reaction, however, the chal-
lenge is to turn a negative experience into a produc-
tive one—that is, to counter adversity with resilience.
Psychological resilience is the capacity to respond
quickly and constructively to crises. It’s a central dy-
namic in most survival stories, such as those of the
shell-shocked individuals and organizations that ral-
lied in the wake of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. But

ing a series of pointed questions, managers can
grasp their own and their direct reports’ habits of
thought and help reframe negative events in pro-

can learn to stop feeling paralyzed by crisis, respond
with strength and creativity, and help their direct re-

Building the House
"We're not taking this lying down...It's a war," warns
Ken Barker, director of apparel at Adidas America
(Salter, 2005, p. 70). Baker's statement is in reference
to the rapid success in the apparel market by a young
and up-and-coming Under Armour brand. The Under
Armour brand dominates the performance apparel cat-
egory so much (with around 75% market share) that
the name has become synonymous with the product
(Salter, 2005). The consistent growth of total revenue
from $115.4 million in 2003 to $607.7 million in 2007
indicates the rapid success that Under Armour has
experienced (Think Equity Partners, 2007).
The Under Armour Company was created by Kevin
Plank, a former collegiate football player who felt he
and his teammates' needs were not being met when it
came to performance wear. Plank has taken a unique
T-shirt company and turned it into a market share
leader, and in the process he brought a fledgling and
obscure market category into the forefront of the con-
sumers' minds.
Founder Kevin Plank's passion for success could be
seen from his football days where he came in as a walk-
on fullback for the University of Maryland, and
through hard work and determination, he left as a full
scholarship athlete and captain of special teams. This
same will and determination, coupled with Plank's
work ethic, has served as the backbone of Under
Patrick Kraft, PhD, is a clinical professor of sport
management in the School of Business Administration at
the University of Loyola-Chicago. His research interests
include brand development, brand equity, marketing,
and sponsorship.
Jason W. Lee, PhD, is an assistant professor in the
Department of Leadership, Counseling and Instructional
Technology at the University of North Florida. His
research interests include socio-cultural aspects of sport,
sport branding, and the use of film as an educational tool
in sport management.
Armour during its rise to becoming one of the most
successful apparel companies of all time. The mission
of Under Armour is to make technically advanced
products that are engineered with superior fabric con-
struction, to provide proven innovation available to
the masses—aimed at making athletes perform better
(UnderArmour.com, 2008).
The modest beginnings of this young market leader
were formed out of Plank's grandmother's townhouse
in Washington D.C. It was here where Plank, along
with his good ñ îend and former Maryland lacrosse
player Kip Fulks, who eventually become the compa-
ny's Vice President of Production, started the company
with $20,000 of their own money, $40,000 from credit
and $250,000 from a small business loan ("Under
Armour performance apparel," 2004). By the end of
the company's first year, 500 Under Armour HeatGear
(sweat-resistant) shirts had been sold in various styles,
amounting to about $17,000 in sales.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
