What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words
that expresses a complete
thought.
Every complete
sentence contains
two parts: a subject
and a predicate.
The Simple Subject
The simple subject is what (or
whom) the sentence is about.
Natalie writes books.
To identify the subject, you ask yourself:
What part of the sentence tells whom
or what the sentence is about?
The Simple Predicate
The simple predicate is the main word
that describes the action or the state of
being of the subject.
To identify the predicate, you ask yourself:
Which part describes the action or
state of being?

First find the verb and then make
a question by placing ``who?''
or ``what?'' before it.

What is a sentence fragment?
 A sentence fragment is a group of words that is
missing a subject, a predicate, or both.
 Example:
Sentence Fragment: Four students in our class
from Egypt.
This thought is not complete. It is missing the
predicate.
Complete sentence: Four students in our class
are from Egypt.
What are run-on sentences?
 Run-on sentences contain two separate thoughts
that are run together with a coma or without any
punctuation.
 Example:
Run-on sentence: A dance will be held on
Saturday, I’m going.
Complete sentence: A dance will be held on
Saturday, and I’m going.
Is it a fragment or run-on sentence?
 Papers on the floor.
 Children are part of the family they should
help their parents.
 The new president.
 Rakes his hair with a comb.
