A success coach says you can change your fortunes by tapping into the power of your
mind
The mind can be man’s best friend or man’s worst enemy. I had heard this as a child, but did not
know what it really meant until I came acrossa book called Powersof the SubconsciousMind by Dr
Joseph Murphy. After reading this book, I clearly understood the unlimited power of the mind and
how the mind can make or break a person.
Ever since, I have been researchingand applying the powers of the subconsciousmind. I have been
doing this for almost 18 yearsin my own life and have found tremendous success. Here’s the
conclusionof my 18 yearsof researchin this field: the subconsciousmind, simply put, controlsevery
aspect of your life, and if used correctly, it canhelp youcreate the life of your dreams.
This is how it works
Youmust have heard the story of Aladdin and the genie in the lamp, where the genie alwayssays
only one thing: “Your wish is my command”. The genie does not care what Aladin asks for, or what
his reasoning is for wanting what he wants. All he is concernedwith is fulfilling his master’s wishes,
whatever these may be.
The subconsciousmind, I have come to understand, is exactly like the genie in that story. Set it to a
task, and it makes it its life’s purpose to deliver. The only difference isthat instead of rubbing a lamp
to activate this magical thing we call our subconsciousmind, youhave to understand how to give it
commands.
So, how is that done? We command our genie, our subconsciousmind, by the thoughts we hold in
our mind, the words we say (the words we speak out or the words we speak within ourselves —
commonly known as self-talk) and the images we hold in our mind. Whatever we think, speak or see
in our minds become the commands we issue for the subconsciousmind.
What we need to understand is that the genie is so powerfulthat it has the ability to convert allthese
commands (spoken and unspoken) into reality. It does so by attracting people, events, situations and
circumstancesyour way, and also by giving youideas that move youtowards your goals.
The catchis that irrespective of whether the commands are positive or negative, the subconscious
mind will start working to make these materialise. It merely obeysyour command, without stopping
to question for reasons for wanting what youwant or thinking as youdo.
Think about your goals, not your fears
If youkeep on saying : “I am not feeling well”, “I am feeling really sick”, “My health is not good at all”
continuously in your mind or out loud, the subconsciousmind actually followsthe orders and can
really make my health worse. When the words are said with a strong belief, the words work even
more powerfully and make the commands a reality.
The problem is that most people are always thinking or talking about what they don’t want. For
instance, if a person’s health has been poor, he or she may worry about having a heart attack; if a
person is in a relationship that is strained, he or she may think “Thispersonnever listens to me” and
if he or she is struggling with money, he or she may worry about future prospects, about how he or
she will pay the bills etc. Most people focuson their current reality, and the subconsciousmind then
continues to keep the person in the same situation. Nothing changes for them no matter how hard
they try.
Now here’s the secret:To effect that change, youmust create new thoughts and new images in your
mind...think of what youwant, rather then what youdon’t want or worry about. If youare ill, start
thinking about good health and well-being, perhaps what youwould do when you’re well.
Think of these thoughts and the subconsciousmind will make them happen for you. The trick,
therefore, is to learn how to master your thoughts.
This seven-step process will set you on the right track:
STEP 1
Be clear about what you want
Find a quiet place and take some time to write down what youreally want in your life. Write this
down in complete detail without worryingabout how youwill achieve it. Let your deepest desires
pour out on those pages, right from the bottomof your heart. Write down what youwant in all areas
of your life: health, appearance, relationships, finances, career, business etc. Describe the ideal life
that youwould like to live.
STEP 2
Set time-bound goals
Break down the vision you’ve writtenabout into actionable goals. For example, if youwant to get
healthy, youmay want to start exercising. And set deadlines, for instance, “I will exercise for at least
45 minutes, five times a week starting on June 27, 2017.”
STEP 3
Stay focused
Create some toolswhich will keep your mind focusedon the goals. For example, youmay make a
dream book where youcan write down all your goals and stick correspondingpictures. If youwish to
travelto the US, youcan stick the picture of the Statue of Liberty with youstanding in the front of it
with your family (youcan use photoshopor other toolsto do this). Youcan also take a chart paper
and stick all the picturesof your goals on it. This is called a vision boardwhich youcan paste/hang
on the wall opposite where yousleep. These toolswill help keep youon track.
STEP 4
Program the subconscious
Every night before sleeping, relax and look at your visionboardor dream book. Internalise those
images as if those dreams/ goals have already been achieved.
When youvisualise this, make it a strong effort to convince your mind that these dreams have
already been realised. How youfeel is very important — it goes a long way in convincingthe
subconsciousmind and rewiring it so as to make positive things happen. Remember, that the
subconsciousmind is most active just before youfall asleep and right after youwake up in the
morning.
While visualising positives, youcan also make certain affirmations. “I am feeling so happy and so
grateful that my goal has been achieved,” for instance — hold onto this thought for one or two
minutes, for each goal. Repeat this processbefore bedtime and after youwake up in the morning too.
STEP 5
Activate the subconscious
When youfollowstep 4 every single day for 30 days or more, the subconsciousmind gets activated
and starts attractingsituations, circumstances, people and eventsto help youachieve the goals.
It will now start giving youideas and will also drive youinto action for achievingyour goals.
STEP 6
Action is required
Nothing is ever achievedwithout due effort and action. So, to be clear, while your subconsciousmind
may inspire yousucceedand may evendraw the right eventsand opportunitiesyour way, ultimately,
successboils down to what youdo when facedwith an opportunity.
Actionsfall into two categories — obviousand inspired actions. Obvious actionsare those which we
know we should perform(like completing a project well and on time) whereas inspired actionsare
those which the subconsciousmind will inspire youto do (like, moving out of your comfort zone to
do your homework for that project, and consequently presentingnew and freshrather than staid
ideas).
STEP 7
Persistence pays
When youstart moving towards your goals, youmay face obstaclesand challenges. The key is to
never give up. Developthe qualities of persistence and courage to keepon movingahead until you
achieve your goals. Roadblocksand obstaclesare a part of life, so learning to deal with them while
staying focussedon your goal is most important.
