Skills required to understand historical
concepts
Historical sources and evidence
 It is important to be able to interpret and explain
historical information from different sources:
 Primary sources
 Secondary sources
 Identify sources that are reliable.
 Create evidence by using sources to answer
questions about the past.
Multi-perspectivity
 People perceive events in different ways, including
historians.
 These perspectives may be a result of people’s : age,
social position, gender, beliefs, values and different
ways in which people today see the actions and
behaviours of people of the past.
Cause and effect
 Concept used to identify the reasons for events and
their results.
 The consequences of events drive future events and
helps to understand human behaviour.
 Historians use this concept to track series of events in
the short term and long run.
 Can you think of a personal event in your life that led
to other developments?
Change and continuity
 Contrasting what has changed and what has remained the same over a
period of time, helps to make sense of the past.
Time and chronology
 Placing events in the order in which they happened
Exciting Ways of engaging with
historical content
1. Ask relevant questions about every historical event – e.g.
 Why are we studying this?
 How does it relate to me personally?
 How does it relate to the world today?
 What does the event have to do with world history?
2. Use different resources to collect
data
