John Guandolo is a retired Marine Corps officer and former FBI agent who founded UnderstandingTheThreat.com and supports charitable organizations including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A small study by the National MS Society found that 20 minutes of yoga, cycling or treadmill walking improved reaction times on cognitive tasks in people with MS compared to rest, and treadmill walking provided additional benefits; researchers will use these results to design larger future studies on exercise for cognition in MS patients.

The brain is the most active organ in the body and therefore very sensitive to daily stresses. Getting the right amount of exercise, proper nutrition, cognitive stimulation and adequate sleep enhances brain structure and function throughout our lives.
Great minds over the ages have known that physical activity is necessary to keep the mind strong and clear. Aerobic exercise improves cognitive function in humans, produces increases in brain volume, stimulates neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, and increases neurotrophic factors in different areas of the brain. Physical exercise may protect the brain against reduction in cognitive functions in the elderly and delay the onset and slow down the progression of Alzheimer disease.
The loss of strength, cognitive function and stamina attributed to aging is in part caused by reduced physical activity. Inactivity increases with age. By age 75, about 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women engage in no physical activity. Among adults aged 65 years and older, walking and gardening or yard work are, by far, the most popular physical activities. Social support from family and friends has been consistently and positively related to regular physical activity.
Older adults should consult with a physician before beginning a new physical activity program. Physical activity need not be strenuous to achieve health benefits. Older adults can obtain significant health benefits with a moderate amount of physical activity, preferably daily. A moderate amount of activity can be obtained in longer sessions of moderately intense activities (such as walking) or in shorter sessions of more vigorous activities (such as fast walking or stair climbing). Additional health benefits can be gained through greater amounts of physical activity, by increasing the duration, intensity, or frequency. Because risk of injury increases at high levels of physical activity, care should be taken not to engage in excessive amounts of activity. Previously sedentary older adults who begin physical activity programs should start with short intervals of moderate physical activity (5-10 minutes) and gradually build up to the desired amount. In addition to aerobic activity, older adults can benefit from muscle-strengthening activities. Stronger muscles help reduce the risk of falling and improve the ability to perform the routine tasks of daily life.

This study assessed the physical activity levels and quality of life of 36 adults with intellectual disabilities who use habilitation programs in Zagreb, Croatia. The results showed that:
1) The total physical activity level of participants, measured in MET-minutes/week, was high on average. Half of participants engaged in a high level of physical activity.
2) Physical activity levels did not differ by gender or degree of intellectual disability. Those involved in competitive sports had higher activity levels than those in recreational sports.
3) Quality of life, as rated by parents, was positively correlated with inclusion in physical activity for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This highlights the importance of their participation in rehabilitation and occupational programs.

This study tested whether recalling a positive or negative past exercise experience could increase future exercise intentions and behavior. Undergraduate students were randomly assigned to recall a positive exercise memory, a negative exercise memory, or no memory. They completed surveys about exercise attitudes, motivation, and intentions at two time points, with a one-week period in between. Students who recalled a positive exercise memory reported higher levels of exercise during that week than those in the control group, while those who recalled a negative memory reported intermediate levels. Activating a positive motivational memory had a significant effect on subsequent self-reported exercise, even after accounting for prior attitudes and motivation.

This study tested whether recalling a positive or negative past exercise experience could increase future exercise intentions and behavior. Undergraduate students were randomly assigned to recall a positive exercise memory, a negative exercise memory, or no memory. They completed surveys about exercise attitudes, motivation, and intentions at two time points, with a one-week period in between. Students who recalled a positive exercise memory reported higher levels of exercise during that week than those in the control group, while those who recalled a negative memory reported intermediate levels. Activating a positive motivational memory had a significant effect on subsequent self-reported exercise, even after accounting for prior attitudes and motivation.

with age, and therefore, the number of medications used increases
correspondingly. Polypharmacy is a scenario in which five medications or more
are consumed concurrently (regardless of dose and duration of consumption),
which leads to reduced quality of life, physical problems, increased drug
interactions, adverse effects, and medical complications and increases the cost
of treatment. Moreover, polypharmacy increases the incidence of falls, frequency
of hospital admission, length of stay, and the death rate among patients, especially
in the elderly population. This would allow therapies like Yoga, pranayama,
and meditation to act as an effective mainstay or adjunctive or alternative therapy
for many disorders, as it can be cost-effective, patient-compliant, and clinically
efficacious with the most negligible side effects. However, very few studies
have focused on the impact of yogic practices on reducing drug dosage or
polypharmacy among patients. Hence, a Medline English literature search was
planned to review all the studies demonstrating a dose-response effect between
yogic practices and the number/dosage of medication reduction in different
disorders. Data extracted and analyzed depicted that the practice of Yoga,
pranayama, and meditation can result not only in reducing the number of
medications but also the dosages in hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus,
bronchial asthma, arthritis, sleep disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD), gastrointestinal disorders like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome

The brain evolves during our childhood years as it continues to develop and is affected by lifestyle habits such as physical activity, cognitive activity, nutrition and sleep.
Although there is growing scientific evidence that exercise is associated with improved cognitive function, academic performance, and overall health in children, the limited amount of time generally dedicated to physical activity during the school day continues to decline in many schools.
The activity requirements for healthy brain and cognitive function are really relatively modest. For children, moderate aerobic activity of about 60 minutes a day can make a big difference, especially in children that are currently low-performers. There is work to be done in the United States and other countries to meet these activity goals as only about 30% of high school students achieve them.
This presentation provides a current summary of the human research on aerobic exercise and cognitive function in children and teens.

Aim and objective: This retrospective review of clinical data was done to determine cardiovascular effects of a single yoga session in normal subjects as well as patients of different medical conditions. Methods: Data of 1896 patients (1229 female, 633 male and 34 transgender) with mean age of 36.28 ± 12.64 y who attended yoga therapy sessions at CYTER between November 2010 and September 2012 was used for analysis. Heart rate (HR), systolic (SP) and diastolic pressure (DP) had been recorded using non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) apparatus before and after 60 minute yoga sessions at CYTER and indices like pulse pressure (PP), mean pressure (MP), rate-pressure product (RPP) and double product (DoP) were derived from recorded parameters. Participants were undergoing appropriate yoga therapy protocols as per their individual condition while normal subjects had a general schedule of practice. Typical yoga sessions included simple warm ups (jathis and surya namaskar), breath body movement coordination practices (kriyas), static stretching postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation and chanting. Results: There were statistically significant (p < 0.001) reductions in all the studied cardiovascular parameters following the yoga session (Tables 1 & 2). The magnitude of reductions differed in the groups, it being more significant in those having hypertension (n = 505) and less significant in those having endocrine/skin (n = 230) and musculoskeletal (n = 120) conditions. It was moderately significant in the normal subjects (n = 582) as well as patients having psychiatric (n = 302) and respiratory (n = 157) conditions. Conclusion: There is a healthy reduction in HR, BP and derived cardiovascular indices following a single yoga session. The magnitude of this reduction depends on the pre-existing medical condition as well as the yoga therapy protocol adopted. These changes may be attributed to enhanced harmony of cardiac autonomic function as a result of coordinated breath-body work and mind-body relaxation due to yoga.

John Guandolo also supports a number of charitable organizations, including the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. In a recent press release, the National MS Society publicized a small study that investigated whether exercise offered improved cognition benefits to people with MS. Individuals with MS can experience difficulty with information processing and memory, which inspired researchers to gather comparative data on the impact of non-aerobic and aerobic exercises on cognition.

The 24-person study discovered that 20 minutes of guided yoga, stationary cycling, and treadmill walking helped participants improve their reaction times on a computerized task from pre-exercise levels, in comparison to quiet rest periods. Published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, the study also found additional cognitive performance benefits from treadmill walking.
