A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.
II. Checklist: Write at least two paragraphs for each work of art in your exhibition. Each entry in your checklist should contain a short formal analysis of the work and describe how it relates to your thesis. Consider how the sequencing of works in your exhibition affects the development of your argument.
III. Conclusion: This paragraph should not simply restate your thesis. What have we learned from your exhibition? What were the consequences of the works you have chosen? How do these works point to future art historical developments?

In the Northern Europe, however, depiction of the human form remained rooted in the Middle Ages and remained somewhat stylized.

Art movements are collective titles given to art works sharing the same artistic style, ideals, timeframe and technical approach.
1. Renaissance(14th – 16th Century)
This was a period of great cultural and social change in Europe. This period was characterized by imagination, creativity and innovation. It was also a time in when the Europe’s’ classical past was being revisited and reinvigorated. A lot of inspiration from the cultural movements of Renaissance resulted from the attempts of people to imitate and improve the legacies of classical European societies like the Greece and Ancient Greece. The Renaissance as well signified break from the conformist society as well as culture of medieval Europe. It was a time when mew and inventive ideas started to spread and gain great influence.

3. Romanticism (18th – mid 19th century).

It can be perceived as a rejection of the principles of order, harmony, balance, calm, balance, rationalism and idealization that was typically classicism and neoclassicism. Romanticism majorly focused on individual, irrational, subjective, personal imaginative, spontaneous, transcendental and visionary (Brookner 2000). Romanticism was characterized by a deep appreciation of the nature’s beauty, exaltation of emotions over sense of intellect and reason, a new perception of the artist as a supreme creator with creative spirits.

You likely noticed that during the two hundred years covered in this week’s study there were radical changes in how the human figure is depicted in Italy, from something that was highly stylized to an idealized form that looked more real yet was strongly influenced by the Classical Age of ancient Greece and Rome. In the Northern Europe, however, depiction of the human form remained rooted in the Middle Ages and remained somewhat stylized.
Use the textbook and/or online sources to locate and capture three works of art.

Your final paper will be a 1200–1500 word critical essay about the three works of art you have chosen. Art movements are collective titles given to art works sharing the same artistic style, ideals, timeframe and technical approach.
1. Renaissance(14th – 16th Century)
This was a period of great cultural and social change in Europe. This period was characterized by imagination, creativity and innovation. It was also a time in when the Europe’s’ classical past was being revisited and reinvigorated. A lot of inspiration from the cultural movements of Renaissance resulted from the attempts of people to imitate and improve the legacies of classical European societies like the Greece and Ancient Greece. The Renaissance as well signified break from the conformist society as well as culture of medieval Europe. It was a time when mew and inventive ideas started to spread and gain great influence.

· Masaccio, Trinity in the Church of Santa Maria Novella, 1426, Florence. (Italicize the titles of art works.)

2. Baroque (1600 – 1750).
This was a period of artistic style which employed exaggerated motion as well as clear and easily interpreted details of producing tension, drama, painting, theater, music, exuberance, architecture and grandeur in sculpture. It began in Rome, Italy and spread to the rest of Europe (Williams 2012).

3. Romanticism (18th – mid 19th century).
Romanticism is an intellectual or attitude orientation which was marked with numerous works of literature, music, paintings, criticism, architecture and historiography in the western civilization. It can be perceived as a rejection of the principles of order, harmony, balance, calm, balance, rationalism and idealization that was typically classicism and neoclassicism. Romanticism majorly focused on individual, irrational, subjective, personal imaginative, spontaneous, transcendental and visionary (Brookner 2000). Romanticism was characterized by a deep appreciation of the nature’s beauty, exaltation of emotions over sense of intellect and reason, a new perception of the artist as a supreme creator with creative spirits.

Synthesis Essay.
A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. In an academic synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources, make judgments, draw conclusions and critique individual sources to determine the relationship among them. You should refer to supporting material and examples from class readings, discussions, and research, with proper citations. The essay should not be a summary of the readings but examination of their meanings in systems of belief and reason. You should analyze the claims of authors and their implications. You should also develop an argument, or thesis, based on the synthesis of class readings.
Making your own Myth-to be posted on your Tumblr blog
The purpose of this collaborative writing exercise is to create an origin myth story of your own imagination. Using the examples from the origin myths in the DBR 200 iBook-create your own origin myth! What was there before the beginning of time? Of space? What does the universe look like in your imagination? Is there a “Creator” in your story? Or multiple “entities” that act like creators or instigators or accidents of nature? What do these “beings” or entities look like? How do they act? Are you telling the story from the perspective of ancient, primitive imaginations? Or is this story a translation or recital of the “original story” told by the “creators” or “first beings or entities?” What about the origins of humankind? How will you describe those events? What sort of relationship do those creatures have with the world or universe?
Step One-Try to address some of the issues I’ve raised above in your group discussions. Begin to sketch in some of the details you might like to include as a kind of framework or outline to your story.
Step Two-Continue to try to collect images or sounds that might be included in a multimedia representation of the story. You should immediately consider the restrictions/limitations to the kind of media that you can post on Tumblr. That will affect your choice of materials and how they are presented.
Step Three-Create the First draft version of the myth and use it to expand/contract depending on how the group wants the version to be received or understood/listened or viewed by your readers. You might even post it up and ask for feedback from “followers” on your Tumblr blogs.
Step Four-Post your final version on Tumblr. Each student in the group should post the same/group’s version of the origin story. I will reblog the final versions to everyone. The final version should have a short section at the bottom of the work acknowledging sources, such as the origin myths included in the iBook, in the form of footnotes that detail how a particular figure from one of the origin myths inspired your version, etc.
