The Essential Question Background as a teacher Different types of schedules Different types of delivery systems Current system in Valders and example Concerns: standards, constant reviewing, sense of continuity, band a “fluff” or filler class? WHAT ARE BAND STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS BAND BASED ON FREQUENCY OF CLASS MEETING?
Literature Review Summary Middle Schools better than Junior High for adolescents Intense, interest-based activities, inclusion, differentiated learning, excellence and achievement rather than intellectual conformity A/B Rotation and problems DPI has many competencies and benchmarks, but no guidelines for minutes per week
My Study 39 enthusiastic 8th grade band students, supervised by librarian 13 statements: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree Looking for liking or not liking band every day or every other day and What they thought about gap between rehearsals and Importance of band compared to core classes and How the band sounds compared to how many times they meet per week
Students like band to meet as much as possible
Results Students would prefer to always meet 3 times per week Students would not enjoy band more if it met every day They would not quit band if it met every day
We sound better if we meet 3 times per week
I would enjoy band more if it met every day
Recommendations Study calendar to ensure fairness between classes that share the A/B rotation Avoid the A/B block when planning special activities-use the common core block Alternate Fridays? How about 22-minute periods sharing Friday class time to establish continuity? Further study:Which exploratory classes are offered throughout the nation and how does the number of exploratory classes offered affect scheduling.
