Let's look at the questions students should be asking as they strive to produce reader-relevant media, operate in a competitive market and prepare for the 21st-century workforce. See how critical thinking and entrepreneurship go hand in hand as we tackle content, delivery and more.
Regardless of page type or screen size, universal design principles make all the difference in how to organize and present meaningful stories. This session will address key concepts like visual hierarchy, contrast and unity with a look at space, type and color as essential design elements.
The festive season has arrived in Streatham, and we are delighted to have, once again, partnered with the inStreatham Business Improvement District to bring you this beautiful bumper issue of the magazine. See The Streatham Book of Christmas 2019, created by the BID, in the centre pages. It contains plenty of ideas for going out, gift shopping, eating out, and entertainment in Streatham, plus a guide to some of the great local salons and spas to help you look festive and fabulous. The big news is that local singer-songwriter, Lianne La Havas, (Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, supporting Alicia Keys, Paloma Faith are just some of her credits) will be turning on Streatham’s Christmas lights on
7th December.
Spoiler alert: Streatham Common has (sadly) never been twinned with Meribel (see p3 of the Streatham Book of Christmas). It was a PR stunt by a ski holiday firm a few years ago. Although it is possible to ski on the Common if the powder is right....après ski at the Rookery Café, anyone? It wouldn’t be right to ignore the General Election on December 12, so we have been meeting the Streatham Parliamentary Candidates from the main four parties to find out a bit about them, since the only certainty is that we are getting a new MP. There’s a lot of agreement among them about local issues – and favourite Streatham spots. Thanks to each of them for standing to serve Streatham. Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, Streatham! See you in 2020!

4. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES & STUDY ABROAD
Hi everyone! My name is James Sizer and I am the Director of Multicultural Student
Engagement. A lot of you may know me, as I was an Area Coordinator with Residence Life
here at UD for the last four years. I am very excited to transition from Residence Life to
Multicultural Student Engagement. I believe that the experiences that I had in Residence Life
will help me to continue to be a great resource for our students.
I am excited to continue working with our Black Student Union and Phi Theta Psi. I also want
to connect with other student organizations and identify any needs for new student
organizations so that students can find groups in which they feel connected with their peers.
A major focus for me this year is student retention. I am working on a few initiatives that will
hopefully help students not only persist but also thrive through their college years and even
after graduation.
Feel free to stop by my office, Heritage Center 306B, to say hi when you get a chance. I’m
looking forward to a great year!
SAVE THE DATES for our annual Study
Abroad Week, September 19-23. Several of
our study abroad providers will be on
campus. We will send more information
through the Spartan Scoop, but providers will
be available for classroom visits and individual
meetings as well as presenting information
displays in the Heritage Center hallways
throughout the week. And don’t forget
International Education Week, November 7 to
11, with the International Fair scheduled for
Thursday November 10. We will also sponsor
the International Photography competition
again this year in the Bisignano Gallery.
GOOD LUCK and safe travels to our semester
abroad students this Fall! Jessi Tapia is
already studying at University of Newcastle,
Australia, as the “Spring” term there began in
July. Emily Mitchell plans to study in Dublin
and Claire Stoeffler will be studying in
Limerick, Ireland for the Fall term.
We welcome another great group of
international students this month,
undergraduates as well as students studying
in our cohort MBA program and the MAC
program. We expect that our numbers will
top 200 this fall. Please welcome each of
these students as you see them, and think
about the amazing amount of courage and
discipline it takes to travel far from home and
live and study in a language and culture that
are different from your own. If, as faculty,
staff, or students you have concerns, ideas, or
questions, we would love to hear from you.
Although there are good resources across
campus for this group of students, our office
strives to be supportive of, and grateful to, all
of you for your contributions to their success!
Best wishes to everyone for a GREAT year!
And remember, “don’t cancel class”….contact
our office to arrange a for a study abroad
presentation! We’ll be happy to help.

CAMPUS MOM
A message from our Campus Mom, Barbara Smeltzer: “I was fortunate to be able to meet with the
new PA students for a short time at the end of July. What a great addition to our student body
and UD program. Although classes have not yet begun for our undergraduates, I have been
receiving requests to talk to some classes and do an etiquette presentation with others. After
meeting many of our new students during early registration days in May and June, I think we will
have an enthusiastic group this year.”
5. Our Career Services have undergone some language changes over the summer that we are excited to share. As we continue to promote
the holistic development of the student, as well as living lives of purpose both during and after students’ time at UD, we’ve changed our
name to Services for Vocation & Civic Engagement. With this title change comes a few additional services offered, but rest assured that we
still provide career development & exploration assistance, resume & cover letter help, preparation for graduate/professional schools, mock
interview programming, internship help, and other campus events. Our services will now include more opportunities and information
about civic engagement and service learning, as well as off-campus work study. If you’re not familiar with our Center for Advising &
Vocation or our staff, we welcome you to come visit us in the lower level of Peters Commons! This fall, we’re looking forward to
continuing our Resume Clinic program in the classroom, bringing our career development message to the PRF 201 & PRF 281 course-
work, promoting our student organization Future Young Professionals, and offering many networking opportunities for students
including mock/informational interviews, informational tables, our Leaders Luncheon partnering with the GDDC, Navigating Similarities &
Differences, and more!
Anne Funke, & Dr. Amy Baus, attended the NCDA Global Career Development Conference
in Chicago, June 30th
– July 2nd
, NCDA is a division of the American Counseling
Association. The conference welcomed over 1300 participants, representing 19 countries.
This year’s theme: “Fostering Well-Being through Meaningful Work”. A site visit and tour of
Google’s ware house district business office was also provided.
Anne Funke and Dr. Amy Baus presented at the Career Professionals of Iowa Conference at
Graceland University, July 7th
& 8th
. Anne presented a session entitled Connecting Course-
work to Career Development, which reviewed best practices of UD’s course offerings that
focus on career development. Dr. Baus led a round table discussion entitled Leveraging
the Power of Our Differences: Promoting Student Professional Development for Diversity &
Inclusivity, which reviewed UD’s initiatives to promote cultural dexterity as an important
soft skill to assist students and enhance their career development, as well as opening doors
of employment opportunities with the abilities to understand, manage, coach, work and
communicate effectively with those of different backgrounds and across multiple
dimensions of diversity. Examples of training and programming on the UD campus to
promote knowledge, inclusivity, and affirming language to the student body regarding
sexual and gender identities, as part of student professional development was provided.
UD’s Counseling & Life Services in
collaboration with the Veterans Center
hosted a UC4 Training on the campus,
Wednesday, August 10th. Over 100
faculty, staff, and clinical professionals
participated in the training from
higher educational institutions
throughout the state of Iowa. The
training aimed to increase competency
in the concerns, challenges,
culture, and experience of
Service Members & Veterans
attending college. This
training is facilitated by the
Center for Deployment
Psychology, partially funded
by the Department of
Defense.

Over the 2016-2017,
UD’s Counseling & Life Services welcomes on-campus coalition partnerships with the
Riverview Center & Waypoint Services to assist with gaps in our gender-based violence
prevention & response work. We have learned through the University’s 2015-2016
online Haven survey through EVERFI that we want to continue to encourage healthy
majority of students who can help create a culture of care & accountability through
prevention messages to build safe, positive communities. However, we want to be
consistent & enhance efforts of outreach & education to the unhealthy minority of
students who endorse attitudes & behaviors that contribute to sexual violence &
withdrawing themselves from preventative efforts due to a lack of education & empathy.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The Office of Student Activities is excited for another year full of fun events and student
engagement. There are a number of annual events taking place this fall to check out. For
example, the Student Involvement Fair will take place on Thursday, September 8 from 11 am to
1 pm on the Quad. This event is a great way for students to connect with one another as well
as learn more about student organizations and departments on campus. Homecoming is
always a special time on campus and this year is no different. From Hypnotist Jim Wand on
Tuesday, October 11 at 9 pm in Butler Hall, to Magician Daniel Martin on Thursday, October 13
at 9 pm on Knapp Stage, to the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 15 at 9 pm in Black
Box Theater, the Heritage Center will be full of laughter and fun throughout the week. The
Homecoming theme this year is Forever Spartan Blue so between the Homecoming freebies
to the décor for the dance, there will be a lot of Spartan Blue to showcase our strong school
spirit. Even more Homecoming events will be taking place throughout the week so be sure to
keep an eye out for all of them. The Office of Student Activities loves helping students find their
special niche on campus whether that be through a student organization, event, or
department. We want to make sure that each student feels at home and connected during
their time at UD. So be sure to direct students to check out the Student Activities Portal:
bit.ly/OSAPortal or email osa@dbq.edu to see how they can get connected and find their
special niche here at UD.
Great things are happening through the fellowship of students who seek to love God, and we hope
even more students on campus come to discover what others have already. We know that all of us
long for authentic and real community, and we thrive when experiencing joyful friendships that are
genuine. The love of God can impact our lives, and in turn, we can impact the lives of those around
us. Joyfully-committed students are making plans for retreats, Bible studies, and many special
events. But what we are most excited about is a brand new, Sunday evening worship service that
will be launched this Fall! In this effort, we are resolving to
discover and expecting to find a collision of heaven’s good
gifts and earth’s great need.
Are you ready? Getting involved can be as easy as just
coming to our upcoming events.
Join us for an Ice Cream Social Wednesday, August 24th
from 6:30 to 8:30. Live music, a live atmosphere, and
of course, live flavors (French silk, white raspberry
truffle, sea salt caramel, mint chocolate chip, and
vanilla). Let us share with you our spirit of optimism
for the year.
On September 18th
, we will officially launch “Impact”,
UD’s own crossroads of worship and community. It’s a weekly worship and fellowship
event to strengthen and inspire your faith, or even give you a place to start. We’ll meet at
5:30 Sunday nights in Blades Chapel. Services will be slightly less than an hour & will
include all you would find in your Sunday morning church but with a heavy touch of
collegiate enthusiasm, & some of your peers leading worship!
Don’t drift away when the leaves fall, stick with us for the October 21-23 Fall Retreat. Let the
troubles and burdens that can come into the mix be the first to fall away as we come
together for food, recreation, teaching, worship and a chance to get to know each other
more. You have to experience it to understand what an impact it can make on your life.
All year we’ll have small groups checking God out by considering what the Bible has to say;
these groups meet in the residence halls. Watch for more details for a gathering near you,
and come as you are! You don’t need to know the Bible to participate.
The easiest way to find out about other things is to simply come to chapel on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:00 to 11:20 in Blades.
We hope you get to know your peers and the many student-leaders involved in Campus Ministry. Be
encouraged and come to know the love that God has for you. And we hope you get to know the
wonderful people joining that staff in Campus Ministry. Bridgett Boone is the Director of the Gospel
Choir, and she is now also serving as the Administrative Assistant and Ministry Coordinator for
Campus Ministry. Pastor Dana Perreard is also joining our staff full-time as Campus Pastor and
Associate Chaplain for Worship, continuing his good work in leading worship on campus and
nurturing community among students. Dana has an extensive background in church ministry that is
heavy in music, preaching, outreach and youth.
We can’t wait to share the adventure of life with you this school year!
