Squanto, a member of the Patuxet tribe, was able to speak English after being kidnapped and taken to England by an explorer named Hunt. After returning to New England, Squanto helped the Pilgrims survive by teaching them agricultural techniques for growing corn and using fish as fertilizer. While Squanto helped the colonists, it questions whether the native people of New England would have been better off if they had let the colonists starve or leave on their own.
