Anthony Giddens was born in 1938 in Edmonton, North London. He graduated from Hull University with degrees in sociology and psychology in 1959. Giddens began his career teaching social psychology at the University of Leicester in 1961. He received his doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1974. Giddens later became the director of the London School of Economics from 1997 to 2003 and was appointed to the House of Lords in 2004. Giddens remains a professor at the London School of Economics and is known for his theory of structuration.
