A graph is a structure composed of a set of vertices (i.e.~nodes, dots) connected to one another by a set of edges (i.e.~links, lines). The concept of a graph has been around since the late 19th century, however, only in recent decades has there been a strong resurgence in the development of both graph theories and applications. In applied computing, since the late 1960s, the interlinked table structure of the relational database has been the predominant information storage and retrieval paradigm. With the growth of graph/network-based data and the need to efficiently process such data, new data management systems have been developed. In contrast to the index-intensive, set-theoretic operations of relational databases, graph databases make use of index-free traversals. This presentation will discuss the graph traversal programming pattern and its application to problem-solving with graph databases.
Graphs in the Database: Rdbms In The Social Networks AgeLorenzo Alberton
Despite the NoSQL movement trying to flag traditional databases as a dying breed, the RDBMS keeps evolving and adding new powerful weapons to its arsenal. In this talk we'll explore Common Table Expressions (SQL-99) and how SQL handles recursion, breaking the bi-dimensional barriers and paving the way to more complex data structures like trees and graphs, and how we can replicate features from social networks and recommendation systems. We'll also have a look at window functions (SQL:2003) and the advanced reporting features they make finally possible.
NoSQL databases get a lot of press coverage, but there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding them, as in which situations they work better than a Relational Database, and how to choose one over another. This talk will give an overview of the NoSQL landscape and a classification for the different architectural categories, clarifying the base concepts and the terminology, and will provide a comparison of the features, the strengths and the drawbacks of the most popular projects (CouchDB, MongoDB, Riak, Redis, Membase, Neo4j, Cassandra, HBase, Hypertable).
AWS re:Invent 2016: Alexa in the Enterprise: How JPL Leverages Alexa to Furth...Amazon Web Services
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory designs and creates some of the most advanced space robotics ever imagined. JPL IT is now innovating to help streamline how JPLers will work in the future in order to design, build, operate, and support these spacecraft. They hope to dramatically improve JPLers' workflows and make their work easier for them by enabling simple voice conversations with the room and the equipment across the entire enterprise.
What could this look like? Imagine just talking with the conference room to configure it. What if you could kick off advanced queries across AWS services and kick off AWS Kinesis tasks by simply speaking the commands? What if the laboratory could speak to you and warn you about anomalies or notify you of trends across your AWS infrastructure? What if you could control rovers by having a conversation with them and ask them questions? In this session, JPL will demonstrate how they leveraged AWS Lambda, DynamoDB and CloudWatch in their prototypes of these use cases and more. They will also discuss some of the technical challenges they are overcoming, including how to deploy and manage consumer devices such as the Amazon Echo across the enterprise, and give lessons learned. Join them as they use Alexa to query JPL databases, control conference room equipment and lights, and even drive a rover on stage, all with nothing but the power of voice!

The Azure Cognitive Services on Spark: Clusters with Embedded Intelligent Ser...Databricks
We present the Azure Cognitive Services on Spark, a simple and easy to use extension of the SparkML Library to all Azure Cognitive Services. This integration allows Spark Users to embed cloud intelligence directly into their spark computations, enabling a new generation of intelligent applications on Spark. Furthermore, we show that with our new Containerized Cognitive Services, one can embed cloud intelligence directly into the Spark cluster for ultra-low latency, on-prem, and offline applications. We show how using our Integration, one can compose these cognitive services with other services, SQL computations, and Deep Networks to create sophisticated and intelligent heterogenous applications. Moreover, we show how to redeploy these compositions as Restful Services with Spark Serving. We will also explore the architecture of these contributions which leverage HTTP on Spark, a novel integration between Spark with the widely used Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This library can integrate any framework into the Spark ecosystem that is capable of communicating through HTTP. Finally, we demonstrate how to use these services to create a large class of intelligent applications such as custom search engines, realtime facial recognition systems, and unsupervised object detectors.
Optical Character Recognition has evolved into a mature computer science field, with applications in financial transfers, book digitisation and passport scanning. Now if you would want to add OCR to your Java application, you have lots of options; one of which is Tesseract.
Tesseract has become quite popular amongst software developers because of its accuracy, its open-source status and its active development by Google. By using the Tess4J JNA wrapper it is easily integrated into your Java project.
During this session, I will introduce Tesseract, its pros and cons and how & when to use it. I will compare it to its competitors and I will explain why and how we used it in a case study. To top it off I will live-code a Java application that uses Tesseract and Tess4J to process some example images, so you’ll be able to assess its accuracy for yourself.
Now in geometry, a ‘tesseract’ is the four-dimensional analog of a cube. So will Tesseract live up to its name and help your project to ‘enter the fourth dimension’? Attend this session and find out!

Self-Driving cars. Commercial drones. Smart cameras. Movie and music creation. Powerful & intelligent robots. Over the past few years, a new revolution has brought AI almost to the level of science-fiction. However, most companies are not worried about far-off futuristic applications of AI, they want to know what AI can do - today - for their organisations. Distinguishing the hype from reality can be a bit confusing, especially when you consider the attention that AI gets from the media and commentators. So, how can your organisation get started and put AI to work for you? That is the question I will answer in this talk. From greater customer intimacy, increasing competitive advantage and improving efficiency, I will discuss and show how AI can be used today and help the organisation in more impactful ways.

Solving performance issues in Django ORMSian Lerk Lau
Django ORM, something we can fall in love at the first glance. The ease of programmatically schema definition, straightforward versioning, near no-frills ORM experience, cross-database support, and the list goes on...
However, if your boss(es) started to ask about faster API endpoints, one’s eyes may roll. This is even more evident in his situation, where cross-database support is needed owing to client requirements. So, what can we tell our boss(es)?

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Why You Should Replace Windows 11 with Nitrux Linux 3.5.0 for enhanced perfor...SOFTTECHHUB
The choice of an operating system plays a pivotal role in shaping our computing experience. For decades, Microsoft's Windows has dominated the market, offering a familiar and widely adopted platform for personal and professional use. However, as technological advancements continue to push the boundaries of innovation, alternative operating systems have emerged, challenging the status quo and offering users a fresh perspective on computing.
One such alternative that has garnered significant attention and acclaim is Nitrux Linux 3.5.0, a sleek, powerful, and user-friendly Linux distribution that promises to redefine the way we interact with our devices. With its focus on performance, security, and customization, Nitrux Linux presents a compelling case for those seeking to break free from the constraints of proprietary software and embrace the freedom and flexibility of open-source computing.
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.
