#BOTLOVE
 Presented by Kyle Bunch
Can someone become
friends, or even fall in love
with a bot?
A Quick Glossary of Loaded Terms
• BOTS: Robots, programs, any
    piece of technology that is
    programmed to react/respond to
    specific stimuli or triggers.

• FRIENDS: Someone with whom
    you share a personal, emotional
    connection.
Bots have been many things...
Housekeepers
Personal Assistants
Navigators
Designated Drivers
Explorers
Translators
Warriors
Servants
Sanitation Workers
Creepy Robin Williams
look-alikes
Sometimes it’s indistinguishable...
It looks like us...
It acts like us...
It’s a member of the family.
It loves us...
Or it tries to...
Or pretends to.
And sometimes
it hates us...
Really hates us...
Or it’s just here to kill us...
Or protect us from itself.
Reality Check
We don’t have robots that
look just like us...
But we’re getting there.
We do have
Housekeepers
Surgeons
Therapists
Entertainers
Self-driving Cars
Soldiers
Ping-pong Champions
Pilots
Mass Marketers
ASIMO
(Not to be confused with AWESOM-O)
Soccer Players
And of course...
Jeopardy Winners
But we’re still ages away
from making an emotional
connection with bots.

Right?
Tell that to the kids
who loved this
Tamagotchi.
Or these Furbies.
Or the AIBO.
They may miss the mark sometimes...
...but increasingly, the
connection is being made.
“Ok, you can connect with a
bot like you would a pet.

But humans are different.”
Which is true.
Humans have their attention divided.
The average knowledge worker
switches tasks every 3 minutes.
They get angry.
They get sad.
They forget your birthday.
But hey, we live in the cloud now.
Connection looks less like this...
FACEBOOK

   And more like this.
Data will be assimilated.
HIS RECRUITMENT TACTICS HAVE
Our public personas are ubiquitous.
 BEEN...LET’S JUST SAY, SUCCESSFUL.
But you can still be
whoever you want.
Warrior
Farmer
Future Mayor
Bitchin’ Warlock
The Desired Outcome:
Enabling Human Connection
Crreating Smarter Bots
The Unintended Consequence(s):
Humans Constantly Distracted and/or
Pretending to Be Somebody Else
The Result:
Making Friends with Bots
Looks Pretty Good
Final Thought
Perhaps this is less about loving
bots or technology...
And more about becoming it.
Hardwiring our connection.
This could be our
Sputnik moment.
Or not.
Thank you.
