2. Stress Whatis Stress? Is the emphasis we put on certain parts of a word: com-PU-ter WON-der-ful i-ma-gi-NA-tion or on certain words in a sentence: Did you LIKE it? YES, it was GREAT! Stressed sounds are longer, higher and a little bit louder than unstressed sounds.
3. In English, the position of stress can change the meaning of a word, as in the case of ‘import’ (noun) and ‘import’ (verb), and so forms part of the phonological composition of the word.
4. Word stress Word stress the accent on one syllable in a word. All words of more than one syllable have what is called word stress. This means that at least one of the syllables is l o n g e r and louderthan the other syllables.
5. General Rules • There is only one stress in one word. • Only vowels are stressed, not consonants.
7. Sentence stress In a sentence, some words are stronger than others. The stress is put on the words which give the main information. It is important for listeners to be able to recognize what is important in a sentence.
