or Context
Since the explosion on Graffiti on the New York
subways artists have wanted to share their work on the
streets rather than in a traditional gallery setting. They
believe sharing their work in public has a greater
impact than in the detached setting of a gallery and
represents their ethos as artists in a much personal
way.
Over the years this work has developed from simple
tagging to elaborate wall murals and is now seen as an
established art form in its own right and is no longer
viewed as simple vandalism.
During this project you will be researching all aspects
of the development from graffiti to street art and the
impact it had on the art work and the streets
themselves. You will be presenting your work in the
form of essays and a group presentation as well is
creating street art of your own.

You will be expected to present your work in a
professional and appropriate format; which will include
a filmed presentation, essays, final designs and an
evaluation report.
All work will be submitted via your blog.

Primary and secondary research into grafitti and street
Art
Starter activity
You need to research the different media used by street
artists and find relevant illustrated examples. This
presentation needs to include the work of at least 4
different contemporary street artists / art forms.
This research needs to be uploaded to your blog
Practical activity
As part of this project you will be visiting Manchester to
research and photograph the street art within
Manchester’s Northern Quarter. These images then
need to be edited in Photoshop and placed on your blog

Street Art or Vandalism Presentation Task
Group Task: In groups of 2 or 3 research and create a
presentation which explores the debate “Is street art,
art or vandalism?
You need to research and explore the historical
developments and cultural contexts that effected this
unique and exciting art movement. You also need to
reference a range of contemporary street artists.
Create a supporting power point, which includes images
by the artists you are discussing.
The presentation will be filmed and placed on your blog
Follow up individual Task: Create a 2000 word essay
based with illustrated examples on your research and
presentation. This essay needs to be correctly
referenced and include a bibliography.

Drawing on inspiration for the street artists you have
research and the work seen around the northern
quarter you need to develop a rang on images on a
given theme which represent you as an artist.
You need to explore different ways of generating ideas
for a street art project including rough sketches, mind
maps and experiments before refining your ideas to
produce a set of final outcomes which can be displayed
in a safe and non permanent way. Outcomes can
include stickers, stencils, chalk work, left pieces of art
for members of the public to find etc
All work needs to be uploaded to blog.

They believe sharing their work in public has a greater impact than in the detached setting of a gallery and represents their ethos as artists in a much personal way. Over the years this work has developed from simple tagging to elaborate wall murals and is now seen as an established art form in its own right and is no longer viewed as simple vandalism. During this project you will be researching all aspects of the development from graffiti to street art and the impact it had on the art work and the streets themselves. You will be presenting your work in the form of essays and a group presentation as well is creating street art of your own.

You need to explore different ways of generating ideas for a street art project including rough sketches, mind maps and experiments before refining your ideas to produce a set of final outcomes which can be displayed in a safe and non permanent way. Outcomes can include stickers, stencils, chalk work, left pieces of art for members of the public to find etc All work needs to be uploaded to blog.
