• Retention of visitor spending;

• Employment and training of local
people;
• Education.
Money spent by local tourists is re-circulated in the
local economy – Multiplier effect

 Managers should try and keep tourist money within
 the local area – keep “leakage” to a minimum

   Use suppliers in the local area. Local
   communities can be involved in tourism to make
   sure produce and supplies are bought locally
   rather than from outside the area.
Make tourist facilities open to as many people as possible

 Provide disabled facilities

   Give concessions for families and
   children

    Promote the tourist attraction
Most tourism takes place for commercial reasons to
benefit an individual or company – they want a financial
return !

However....some governments invest in tourism to benefit the
local community and improve their quality of life.
 Examples: Parks, community centres, transport infrastructure
 and visitor attractions
. In some parts of the UK, money from tourists is used to
maintain the areas that they visit
 e.g.
car parking charges are used to maintain footpaths and dry
stone walls. Nurture Lakeland (formerly the Lake District
Tourism and Conservation Partnership) is a good example of
this, raising more than £1.5 million from visitors and tourism
businesses for conservation projects since 1996.
Invest in training local people for tourism jobs

Examples of employment – Hotels, tourist
attractions, tour guiding, hospitality etc

Training means higher standards of customer service
which results in more repeat visitors and a
sustainable tourism industry.
Tourism businesses needs to understand the key issues regarding
responsible tourism in order to develop sustainable business
practices.

 Tourists need to be educated so they can learn how to protect the
 environment and support local communities

  Local business gain skills to improve quality standards

 Local people are educated to make the most of opportunities
 that tourism brings.
