You probably know that community metrics are important, but how do you come up with a plan and figure out what you want to measure? Most open source projects have a very diverse community infrastructure with some combination of code repositories, chat, mailing lists, wikis, forums, and more. Deciding where to focus and what to measure across these many technologies can be a challenge.
What you measure can have a huge impact on behavior within the community, and you want to make sure that you are encouraging people to contribute in sane ways by measuring the activities that matter for your project.

Big Data in Social Media
By definition, Big Data can simply be termed as voluminous data. In more specific definitions, it can be termed as that which is large, complex and fast and a s a result, is not in a position to be processed using the typical traditional methods of data processing. The volume, variety, velocity, variability and veracity are used in the categorizing of data as big data. With the development in technology, and the continued incorporation of these technological sources into our day to day lives, the collected data through the Internet of Things among other information systems has resulted in big data (Ivanov, 2018). One such areas where Big data is found is in the social media platforms. As opposed to the olden days, currently, more and more people and companies are using social media daily to achieve their specific objectives and goals, it is estimated that social media platforms like Facebook produce data as big as 500+ terabytes in a s ingle day!
Most of these data in the social media are as a result of the videos, photos, messages and comments being shared across the media platforms. Not only do individuals use social media to keep in touch, but companies also use it in a concept called social media marketing. Through the media, and using big data analytics, companies are able to map out consumer behavior through what they like and what they share (Nicora, 2019). They use these platforms to reach their target audiences and at the same time use them to get feedback from their clients. As a result, the amount of data from social media platforms is not only voluminous, it is also heterogenous in the sense that it contains both nominal and numeral values from different places, it is variable in that it has unpredictable flow, it is fast because it is collected in real time. This qualifies the data to be Big Data and requires big data analytics to process.

Research Software Sustainability takes a Village
The Research Software Alliance (ReSA) and the Netherlands eScience Center hosted a two-day international workshop to set the future agenda for national and international funders to support sustainable research software.
As the importance of software in research has become increasingly apparent, so has the urgent need to sustain it. Funders can play a crucial role in this respect by ensuring structural support. Over the past few years, a variety of methods for sustaining research software have been explored, including improving and extending funding policies and instruments. During the workshop, funding organizations joined forces to explore how they can effectively contribute to making research software sustainable.
This keynote helped frame the discussion from the perspective of community involvement in research software sustainability.

Current Disruptions in Media: Earthquakes or New Openings? Stanford as Catalyst
Across the globe, new word-of-mouth messaging methods are emerging. Many of these involve new technologies. The strategic use of media has become a game changer for both local and global businesses. Traditional media platforms are outpaced by the speed of flash movements as they unfold. Technical discoveries outpace the scientific journals available to announce them. Journalists, entertainers, academics, scientists, and citizens are experimenting with new tools and platforms for content creation, consumption and curation.

Let's Talk: fundamentals of conversational design
I had a pleasure to teach conversation design at Lviv Data Science Summer School. We’ve discussed architectural approaches, covered semantic funnels and goal-oriented conversations. This presentation was used as a support material and I decided to share it with a wider audience. There are multiple articles introducing chatbots as a concept, including the main architectural principles behind. I’m not going to talk about them here, but rather I am presenting the anatomy of conversation and useful resources to get started with design and development: links to platforms, dialog engines, prototyping tools, connectors, intent recognition, and conversation analytics tools.

Current Disruptions in Media: Earthquakes or New Openings? Stanford as Catalyst
Across the globe, new word-of-mouth messaging methods are emerging. Many of these involve new technologies. The strategic use of media has become a game changer for both local and global businesses. Traditional media platforms are outpaced by the speed of flash movements as they unfold. Technical discoveries outpace the scientific journals available to announce them. Journalists, entertainers, academics, scientists, and citizens are experimenting with new tools and platforms for content creation, consumption and curation.
When the news about Tahir Square, or Occupy Wall Street or, more recently the Brazilian protests, hit the headlines of newspapers and magazines, they were already outdated. Documentaries were equally incapable of tracking and fully describing these movements. Traditional narratives – and the technologies used to tell them - fall short of accurately portraying the ideas and behaviors that are emerging through new modes of communication. Information travels so fast, that news is no longer "new". Ubiquitous media disintermediates traditional business ecosystems. And every company must take on roles of a media company.
The world of digital content is experiencing an explosion of innovation in both creation and consumption of media. It may well have been consumer applications that ignited the transformation, but business, enterprise and government interests have joined the party. Across the entire innovation ecosystem of media, new technologies and new uses of it by people are creating a sea change in the way people participate and in the responses they expect, Streaming coverage, both amateur and professional – both business and community, is powered by cutting edge technology in combinations of smartphones, 4G, drone cameras and, even, Google Glass can report on events and movements, products and services. The new role of the Chief Digital Officer has emerged in many organizations - to help management bridge the changing roles usually played by Chief Information Officers, Chief Marketing Officers, and Chief Technology Officers.

Let's Talk: fundamentals of conversational design
I had a pleasure to teach conversation design at Lviv Data Science Summer School. We’ve discussed architectural approaches, covered semantic funnels and goal-oriented conversations. This presentation was used as a support material and I decided to share it with a wider audience. There are multiple articles introducing chatbots as a concept, including the main architectural principles behind. I’m not going to talk about them here, but rather I am presenting the anatomy of conversation and useful resources to get started with design and development: links to platforms, dialog engines, prototyping tools, connectors, intent recognition, and conversation analytics tools.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome to Become a Conference Speaker!
The goal of this talk is to provide some resources to help everyone feel included and welcome as a conference speaker. Open source conferences are always striving to increase the diversity of their speakers by recruiting new speakers and encouraging people from underrepresented groups to submit talks. But how do you decide what topic to cover? What can you do to help your topic stand out? How do you prevent imposter syndrome from getting in the way of your success as a speaker?
You do not need to be the world’s leading expert on a topic to give a presentation. You just need to know a few things that can help other people learn enough about the topic to get started. By bringing your authentic voice and unique perspective to the topic, people will walk away from your talk with new insights that they wouldn’t get from another speaker.
This talk will cover:
Selecting a topic and a conference for your topic.
Writing a title and abstract that will increase the chances of your talk being accepted.
The importance of your bio during the talk selection process.
Tips for writing and preparing your presentation.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
