Comprehensive Strategy-Formulation
Framework
All nine techniques included in the strategy-
formulation framework require the integration of
intuition and analysis. Autonomous divisions in an
organization commonly use strategy-formulation
techniques to develop strategies and objectives.
Divisional analyses provide a basis for identifying,
evaluating, and selecting among alternative
corporate-level strategies.

STRATEGY PLANNING
THE INPUT STAGE
The input tools require strategists to quantify
subjectivity during early stages of the strategy-
formulation process. Making small decisions in
the input matrices regarding the relative
importance of external and internal factors
allows strategists to more effectively generate
and evaluate alternative strategies.
THE MATCHING STAGE
The matching stage of the strategy-formulation
framework consists of 5 techniques. These tools
rely upon information derived from the input stage
to match external opportunities and threats with
internal strengths and weaknesses. Matching
external and internal critical success factors is the
key to effectively generating feasible alternative
strategies.
The Strengths-Weaknesses-
Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) Matrix
is an important matching tool that helps
managers develop four types of strategies:
SO (strengths-opportunities) Strategies,
WO (weaknesses-opportunities)
Strategies, ST (strengths-threats)
Strategies, and WT (weaknesses-threats)
Strategies.

use a firm’s internal
strengths to take
advantage of external
opportunities
WO Strategies
aim at improving internal
weaknesses by taking
advantage of external
opportunities.
ST Strategies
use a firm’s strengths to
avoid or reduce the
impact of external
threats
WT Strategies
are defensive tactics
directed at reducing
internal weakness and
avoiding external threats
This is four-quadrant framework indicates whether
aggressive, conservative, defensive, or competitive
strategies are most appropriate for a given
organization.

Matrix are designed specifically to
enhance a multidivisional firm’s
efforts to formulate strategies. BCG
matrix graphically portrays
differences among divisions in
terms of relative market share
position and industry growth rate.

The Decision Stage
•This technique comprises stage 3
of the strategy formulation
analytical framework.
•There are also 6 steps required to
develop a QSPM.
The Quantitative
Strategic
Planning Matrix
(QSPM)
•Set of the strategies can be
examined sequentially or
simultaneously.
•It requires strategies to integrade
pertinent external and internal
factors into the decision process.
Positive Features
and Limitations
of the QSPM
 It is beneficial to view
strategic management from a
cultural perspective because
success often rests upon the
degree of support that
strategies receive from a
firm’s culture. If a firm’s
strategies are supported by
cultural products such as
values, beliefs, rites, rituals,
ceremonies, stories, symbols,
language, heroes, and
heroines, then managers
often can implement changes
swiftly and easily.
 The National Association of
Corporate Directors defines
governance as “the
characteristic of ensuring that
long-term strategic objectives
and plans are established and
that the proper management
structure is in place to
achieve those objectives,
while at the same time
making sure that the
structure functions to
maintain the corporation’s
integrity, reputation, and
responsibility to its various
constituencies.”

  • 2. Comprehensive Strategy-Formulation Framework All nine techniques included in the strategy- formulation framework require the integration of intuition and analysis. Autonomous divisions in an organization commonly use strategy-formulation techniques to develop strategies and objectives. Divisional analyses provide a basis for identifying, evaluating, and selecting among alternative corporate-level strategies.

  • 4. THE INPUT STAGE The input tools require strategists to quantify subjectivity during early stages of the strategy- formulation process. Making small decisions in the input matrices regarding the relative importance of external and internal factors allows strategists to more effectively generate and evaluate alternative strategies.
  • 5. THE MATCHING STAGE The matching stage of the strategy-formulation framework consists of 5 techniques. These tools rely upon information derived from the input stage to match external opportunities and threats with internal strengths and weaknesses. Matching external and internal critical success factors is the key to effectively generating feasible alternative strategies.
  • 6. The Strengths-Weaknesses- Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) Matrix is an important matching tool that helps managers develop four types of strategies: SO (strengths-opportunities) Strategies, WO (weaknesses-opportunities) Strategies, ST (strengths-threats) Strategies, and WT (weaknesses-threats) Strategies.
