Straight Outta Compton
Planning and Research
Cinematography/Camera
Establishing shot- to start the scene-the bright side of Compton
wide shot to let the audience view where they live.
Birds Eye View- of Dr Dre lying down on the bed with
Headphones on, showing all the records lay next to
him.
Wide Shot- showing the living room and how
it’s a mess whilst there’s a baby there-
implies that it’s not safe for a baby to live in.
Behind the Shoulder shot- walking towards a trailer
home- connotes they don’t
particularly live in a very wealthy environment.
Over the Shoulder shot- Ice Cube writing down lyrics- that’s their
hobby to get them out oftrouble- stereotyped as what society expected in the 80’s.
Sound and Lighting
Non-Diegetic sound- of an NWA sound track whilst it shows a shot of young Dr
Dre
lying on the bed.
Sound Effect- when the police officer pushed Ice Cube down to show the
impact on how
hard they pushed him down.
Low Key Lighting- to show how dark and violent things really are.
Natural Lighting- at the start to show a fore shadowing event in the future.
Diegetic Sound- of Eazy E rapping the line- implies that’s what he’s good at or
his talent.
Editing
Fades to black- it shows all the good side of Compton and the fade
indicates there’s
another side to Compton- a ‘bad side.’
Slow Cuts- showing a snippets of different characters in the film- to
introduce all the
characters.
Jump Cuts- snippets of what it was being like in NWA- the good and bad
side about
fame.
Zooms into the face- Ice Cube doing something he shouldn’t be judging by
his face.
Mise En Scene
Props- records by the side of him to imply he loves music or is a bug fan of
music.
- Has headphones attached into the record player- to show it’s set in the
80’s.
- Female holding a gun- so it wasn’t only males into crime, females also joined
in.
Facial Expressions- wasn’t surprised so was quite used to it- connotes they grew
up in
a rough environment where everyone expected everyone to have or hold a gun.
Framing- of the manager and the police officer is pretty close- police have more
authority even though the managers earning a lot more.
