Car Ride Tension Music Video Shot Analysis
1.
2. Shot 1
2:18 – 2:20
The first shot seen in the 30
second clip is a tracking
shot following the road in
the dark. This is reflective
of lyric in the song ‘The
Road is long’, but also
gives the effect the car is
moving and is a
perspective shot
from the actors point of
view.
3. Shot 2
2:21 – 2:22
The first shot then cuts to a
crane shot that moves
upwards in front of the car
whilst it still appears to be
moving.
As the camera moves up
over the bonnet we see a
two shot of both Lana and
the male actor, setting
the scene and allowing
the audience to see the
tension in the car.
4. Shot 3
2:23 – 2:26
This shot then cuts to a
extreme close up shot of
Lana through the car
passenger window. In this shot
Lana wipes the condensation
of f the
window. Here through the gap
created in the condensation
the
audience are able to
see her facial
expression. By doing
this, it almost reflects
a last attempt to
escape this doomed
relationship.
5. Shot 4
2:26 – 2:30
This then cuts to a close up
shot of the male actor through
the window screen. This again
shows his facial expression
and as he looks
left towards Lana, it almost
gives the impression that
he knows himself that
it can’t possibly end in a
good way. This also
reflects the tension in
the car as they aren’t
interacting.
6. Shot 5
2:30 – 2:34
This then cuts to a mid shot of
Lana sat in the throne in the
cathedral style location .
This allows the audience to
see the location of the shot
as this is highly important
when understanding the
video as its meaning isn’t clear
to begin with. By
being able to see the
religious location, we
can tell that she has
gone to heaven.
7. Shot 6
2:30 – 2:34
In the same shot Lana makes
reference to the lyric ‘Lets go
get high’, by moving her hand
towards
her mouth and pretending
to smoke drugs. This instantly
emphasises how
this relationship is bad
for her.
8. Shot 7
2:35 – 2:40
This then cuts to a close up
shot of Lana still holding her
hand in the same position as
she finishes off this verse of
the song. This is reflective
of Steve Archers ideas
about how ‘the meat of a
music video are cuts to
close ups of the singers
face’. There is still
reference to the drug
taking.
9. Shot 8
2:41 – 2:43
This shot shows the car
travelling along the
road, which is reflective of the
lyric ‘The road is long’.
Again this is also reference
to the relationship.
The fact that the car is
travelling in the dark is
also reflective of the
relationship.
10. Shot 9
2:44 – 2:45
This then cuts to a close up
shot of the male actor
driving the car. He continues
to look
straight ahead this time
but again the audience
can see that they aren’t
interacting hinting at tension
in the
car.
11. Shot 10
2:45 – 2:46
We then see a close up of
Lana sat in the passenger side
of the car looking slightly to
the left, and she has a serious
facial
expression. Her body
language and the fact that
she isn’t looking at him
reflects the tension and
possibly hints how
unhappy she is in the
relationship.
12. Shot 11
2:47 – 2:49
In the final shot of the 30
second clip we see Lana sat in
the throne again through the
use of a mid shot combined
with a crane
shot. Her the camera
slowly moves upwards
perhaps hinting at her journey
to heaven . In
this shot we also see
her look to the left just
before the shot ends,
perhaps hinting at
how she is angry at
him for the way it
ended.
