Have you ever heard of the Holocene extinction? Well, I'm sorry to break the news to you but we are
in the middle of the Sixth Great Extinction of our planet, "an event characterized by the loss of
between 17,000 and 100,000 species each year" (Biodiversity, 2013). Today, I want to inform you
about diseases, which is one of the lesser–known aspects of extinction and wildlife conservation. I
am knowledgeable on this topic due to a considerable amount of scholarly, research, and from
firsthand experience within my field of fisheries and wildlife. The diseases I will be sharing with
you today include white–nose syndrome, chronic wasting disease, and chytridiomycosis. First, let us
look at white–nose syndrome, explaining exactly what it is, how it affects bats, and effects this has
on humans. White–nose syndrome is an emerging disease that is highly associated with hibernating
bats in the United States, appropriately named after the white fungus that appears around a bats
body and muzzle. The fungal pathogen that infects and grows on the bat's skin is known as
Pseudogymnoascus destructans, so far this "disease has already killed around six million bats in
North America and has spread over two thousand kilometers from its epicenter" (Alves, 2014, p. 1).
This specific fungus thrives in cold environments which is why it can grow so readily inside of
caves where bats hibernate.

students, at there dinning halls, are wasting pounds and pounds of food each day. Campuses all
across the United States are coming up with solutions to stop food wasting on their campuses.
Wasting food can cause many problems such as, environmenetal, cause significant water usuage,
and more money being spent. College students should be all in because if colleges have to spend
more money then students have to spend more money. In college, less money is always the way to
go. Reducing food waste can save money and better help the environment. Ben Simon, fromer
student at the University of Maryland, has taken charge in findling a solutuon to this madness. He
started this program called "Food Recovery Network"(Jameson). Food Recovery Network takes the
wasted food from the dinning hall and delivers it to the local programs to feed the needy (Jameson).
It does not stop wasted food but it provides a benefit. It gives a sloution instead of just throwing
away the food. While this was going on, UM provided a study at there dinning hall each day to see
how much food was being wasted. For one year, there found an average student was wasting 142
porunds of food and a total of 22 million pounds total was being wasted as a school(Cammarota).

Chronic Wasting Disease: A Case Study
In the early stages of infection, animals do not show any symptoms of Chronic Wasting Disease
(Rembert, 2014). In fact, most deer with Chronic Wasting Disease do not appear to be sick
(Rembert, 2014). The incubation period can range from one to five years (Rembert, 2014). In later
stages, infected animals begin to display abnormal behavior such as staggering, carrying their heads
and ears lower, drooling, not showing fear of humans, and an exaggerated wide posture (Rembert,
2014). Sick animals may have poor hair coats and appear emaciated or starving – thus the name
wasting disease (Rembert, 2014). Clinical symptoms are typically not seen in deer less than 16
months of age (Rembert, 2014). Some CWD symptoms may also be characteristic of diseases or
conditions other than CWD (Rembert, 2014). For a tested animal to become infected, examinations
of the brain and lymph nodes must be tested by researchers or animal scientists. However, no animal
may be live–tested; and, unfortunately for the deer, an animal infected by the virus will be

Cervids are any animals that grow a bone antler that will be shed year by year (American Heritage
Dictionary, 2015). Evidence shows humans have not contracted this TSE in any known cases, thus
far.. Standard personal safety procedures apply when cleaning and cutting these cervid carcasses

Chronic Wasting Disease Analysis
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative transmissible spongiform
encephalopathy (TSE ) found in some white tailed deer. CWD is associated with diseases such as
Mad–Cow disease, Scrapie, and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. With well supported evidence it is
hypothesized that CWD originated from Scrapie. The causation of CWD is an abnormal form of
PrPcwd prion. This prion is a naturally occurring protein found in mammals. Prions lack genome
and are highly resistant to degradation. Chronic Wasting Disease can be transmitted by direct
contact between the animals and/or on resources such as salt licks. With a team, Chris Janelle,
studied white tail deer in Wisconsin. Over a 9,000 square mile sample area, more than 185,000 deer
were sampled by the Wisconsin DNR and more than 2,500 of those deer were CWD positive. The

Another interesting finding was that CWD affects the lymph nodes first, the brain second, and
shows clinical signs (drooling and weight loss) third. All those affected places no matter what lead
to death. Based on their study there were four assumptions: deterministic transitions (between
states), spatial homogeneity (210 sq. miles), homogenous transmission and mixing (age, sex,
infection), and no migration. It is believed that CWD has been around since the late '60s–early '70s,

Whitetail Populations
Over just a century ago the whitetail deer population became nearly extinct, mostly due to a rapid
expansion in the railroad system. At this same time market hunting, weak enforcement of game
laws, and habitat loss contributed to the dangerously low deer populations in the late 1800's. In
states like Kansas and Indiana deer were completely extinct, being endangered in many others. With
the whitetail deer population doubling every two years there is an estimated thirty million deer in the
United States (Rooney, 2012). Although with these over–abundant populations comes the
destruction of natural resources along with diseases and other factors that can tremendously affect
the population. While there are many factors that play an active role in the declination of Whitetail
deer populations, chronic wasting disease is just one of them.
Densities
Predators, hunters, and habitat contribute to the increasing densities of whitetail deer in some
locations. The populations of predators, wolves and cougars, have greatly declined in suburban
areas. This declination has helped with the increase of the deer population. Since the 1970's the
number of hunters has been declining. This may be because of the number of people that do not
