1. What is the key composite stock index for each exchange and what was the value the
data of your website review?
Composite index is a grouping of equities, indexes or other factors combined in a
standardized way, providing a useful statistical measure of overall market or sector
performance over time (Investopedia US).
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) established the NYSE Composite Index (NYSE:
NYA) in 1966 to provide a comprehensive measure of the performance of all common stocks
listed on the NYSE, including American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), Real Estate
Investment Trusts (REITs) and foreign listings. In addition, the composite index is made up
by separate indexes for four industry groups such as industrial, transportation, utility, and
finance.
The NYSE Composite Index consists of more than 1,900 stocks, including more than 1,500
U.S companies and over 330 non-U.S companies (NYSE Euronext, 2009). The index is
weighted using free-float market capitalization and calculated on both price and total return
basis.

In contrast to NYSE in United States, both VN-Index of Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange
(HOSE) and HNX-Index of Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) in Vietnam do not act as the
composite index. However, together with the operation of the Unlisted Public Company
Market (UPCoM) since June 2009, which the trading floor of stocks and convertible bonds of
public companies which have not been listed on Hanoi Stock Exchanges, UPCoM-Index has
been used as a composite index for the whole UPCoM (Hanoi Stock Exchange, 2009).

you as a student or potential invest. What was the nature of the information it
contained and why did you believe it was helpful?
It is really essential to do background research and follow some certain investment practices
in order to make wise decisions in the stock market. As a student – a potential as well as a
long-term investor, I think that rather than concerning too much on big companies, I can pay
attention to the long-term prospects of new firms in the stock exchanges.
To do this, we have to do carefully research on companies through some useful sources in the
following.
Firstly, we can search easily market indexes of companies in the NYSE Composite Index on
CNN Money (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/nyse/). Comparing to other websites, such
as NYSE Euronext, Yahoo Finance, NASDAQ, etc, the data of listed companies on CNN
Money consisting of today’s trading, growth & valuation, financials, profile, news and
forecasts, is shown in a clear way that is actually useful for audiences to follow.
Secondly, the other link for Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, it is ASEAN Exchanges
(http://www.aseanexchanges.org/exchange/HOSE). ASEAN Exchange provides detail about
daily trading data in HOSE, hottest listed stocks, FTSE Analytics and latest news about
policies.
