Steve Waugh’s son, brings up ton on the board
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh's 16-year-old son Austin Waugh scored an undefeated
122 to propel New South Wales Metro to the Under-17 National Championships trophy at the
Allan Border Field today (October 6). The right-handed Austin, who batted at number 4, hit 4
fours and 4 sixes on way to a remarkable century in the tournament final against Queensland
on Thursday. In spite of a family background in cricket, father Steve, who has played the
maximum number of Tests by an Australian, wants Austin to look up to India's Virat Kohli as a
role model. Waugh finished the tournament with 372 runs from 8 innings at an average of 74.4.
He remained not out in 3 innings and took 5 catches in the tournament. Batting great Waugh
Senior played in an Australian joint record of 168 Tests. He held the record for a lengthy time
before Ricky Ponting (also 168 Tests) equaled it. Waugh's twin brother Mark featured in 128
Tests. Overall, the world record belongs to Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who won
200 Test caps. This is the second occasion where the son of a former batting great has made
headings. Earlier in April, Rahul Dravid's son, 10-year-old Samit Dravid, had scored a century in
an Under-14 club cricket match at the Loyola ground in Bangalore.
On behalf of Bangalore United Cricket Club (BUCC), which his father serves as a President,
Dravid Jr. stroked 125 against Frank Anthony Public School in the Tiger Cup cricket tournament.
Even Arjun Tendulkar, son of Sachin Tendulkar, made headlines last year for scoring a century
and taking end-to-end four wickets for his side Sunil Gavaskar XI against Rohit Sharma XI during
the Mumbai Cricket Association U-16 Payyade Trophy, which performances as a choice trial for
U-16 cricketers in Mumbai.
