The English teachers at the school organized a talk with Tassos Smetopoulos, the founder of STEPS, a non-profit organization that helps homeless people in Athens, Greece. The 6th grade students learned about the work STEPS does, such as providing food, clothing, medical assistance and companionship to those living on the streets. They discussed the main causes of homelessness in Greece - the economic crisis and influx of migrants. The students participated enthusiastically in the talk, asking questions and gaining an understanding of the issues. The school aims to educate students about empathy, aid, and caring for others.
Remebering the Role of Women in South Africa through DialogueDr Lendy Spires
The Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, hosted the Malibongwe dialogue to highlight the continuing struggle for gender equality and to act as a catalyst to encourage action on issues raised. It was also an opportunity to salute all women who have struggled against inequality. We need to ensure that the struggles of the past were not waged in vain. The organisers were spurred by a call by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on International Women’s Day, March 8 2007. The dialogue featured some of the valiant women from the struggle alongside a new generation of women engaged in continuing the struggle for justice today. Those brave efforts by South African women remain fresh in our memory, giving rationale to the Centre of Memory and Dialogue’s proposition to host both an exhibition (initially displayed at the Apartheid Museum) depicting women’s struggles, and to share these experiences with the generations after them. This exhibition and dialogue established a connection between those past struggles and the efforts of women today, while not forgetting the role of men. It is hoped that the dialogue gave a renewed sense of urgency to various initiatives aimed at bringing the country closer to gender equality. FOREWORD ACHMAT DANGOR The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) seeks to contribute to a just society by promoting the vision and work of its Founder and convening dialogue around critical social issues. Our Founder, Nelson Mandela, based his entire life on the principle of dialogue, the art of listening and speaking to others; it is also the art of getting others to listen and speak to each other.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. From the English department, teachers Emília Prieto and Frankie Casale (with the
support of the management team and tutor Isabel Fuster) organized a very
interesting talk with Mr. Tassos Smetopoulos, founder of STEPS, a non-profit,
grassroots level organization that since last year operates in Athens helping people
who have been living in the streets.
On Monday the 6th of November, the 6th grade students learned first hand the
work STEPS performs in the Greek capital. By means of guided questions led by
Mr. Tassos, we found out the two main reasons a large number of people do not
have a place to take refuge: the great economic crisis that hit Greece especially
hard almost a decade ago, and the constant arrival of migrants who, for various
reasons, must flee from their countries of origin (Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, etc.) with
the dream of finding a paradise in which to start a new life.
We took the opportunity to understand some of the projects that STEPS is
currently developing. Firstly, groups of volunteers travel across Athens to locate
the homeless and communicate to them that there is help out there (company,
conversation, first aid, etc). In addition, every Wednesday and Sunday, in an open
space downtown, next to city hall, they offer food, drinks, conversation, music,
games, legal advice, psychological help and/or first aid to all those who need it. It is
a way to listen to the street connected people, to return the lost dignity, to offer
them basic goods, to embrace them and to help to alleviate their suffering. In
short, it is meant to be a safe space where people can enjoy being themselves
without hesitation.
The 6th students participated with enthusiasm. Not only did the children
exchange opinions with our guest, they responded to the questions while forming
their own. And most importantly, we achieved a very emotional degree of unity that
became evident at the end of the discussion. We are proud to be able to offer such
charitable talks from a humanitarian point of view and raise awareness about this
problem to our students. As adults who are willing, it is indispensable that they be
educated in the values of empathy, help, and love for others. Many thanks to Mr.
Tassos Smetopoulos and Aida del Mar Frontera, who was the person who
connected us. And to all the sixth grade students because of their interest and and
open hearts.
