RESA Mars Rover Project
The Rokenbok Exploratory Space Agency (RESA) is in the process of
developing plans for a space colony on the planet of Mars over the next
ten years.
The engineers at RESA are exploring various creative options for
using existing materials on the Martian surface as a cheap and
efficient way to build structures and habitats on Mars without having
to transport everything from Earth.
In order to help these aerospace engineers understand what materials would be available
and how they might be used, RESA is in need of a small, yet functional martian rover that
can safely land on the surface of Mars and then collect material samples that can be
retrieved and analyzed for possible future use.
Your design and engineering team has been assigned the task of building a scale model
of the Mars Rover that can launch into space, land, and retrieve materials from Mars.
Time is of the essence and your team must work together to prepare your scale model for
presentation to the Rokenbok Exploratory Space Agency at their next planning meeting

What is a Wheel and Axle?
Heavy loads are hard to move by simply pushing
or pulling on them because there are forces that
must be overcome in order for them to move.
One force is gravity, which is the attraction
between the earth and other objects.
This attraction causes the second force known as
friction, which means that the resistance of the
object, as it comes in contact with a surface, must
be overcome before it will move.
The wheel and axle can be used to help move
heavy objects because the surface area of the
wheel is less than the surface area of the load
and this makes it easier to overcome the forces of
gravity and friction.
The ROK Blocks Adventures kit is complete and self-contained; no additional materials are required
to teach this curriculum.
Building Better Learners Program curriculum kit grants are awarded to schools and childcare centers that support underserved student populations. The application should demonstrate that you are supporting an underserved community, have a need for supplemental STEM learning materials, and an interest in incorporating construction toy play into the serious work of learning. Ocean Discovery Institute
Ocean Discovery Institute is a nationally recognized leader in providing science education to students in under-served communities. The Institute's work creates significant impacts for their students, with dramatically improved high school graduation rates and college acceptances. In 2012, Ocean Discovery Institute was one of two organizations selected nationally to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering mentoring.
In collaboration with the Rokenbok Educational Foundation, Ocean Discovery Institute developed, tested and evaluated the Rokenbok Bridge Challenge curriculum for Middle and High school students in 2011 - 2012.
From basic STEM literacies to 3D solid modeling, Rokenbok STEM-MAKER curriculum was created to help you teach technology, engineering, and design in almost any setting. Rokenbok's STEM-Maker Curriculum guides fun and engaging hands-on project based challenges, and models the progression of fluencies mastered by real designers and engineers.
Lesson plans are categorized in three progressive levels for grades 3-12 and align with common core state standards. Progression through these levels builds confidence, a sense of accomplishment setting the groundwork for a love of learning, creating and making.
Play time offers many learning opportunities
As an elementary school educator, I have been drawn to using a variety of construction toys to teach what I deem to be critical knowledge and skills to school-aged children. I have more than 10 years teaching experience using construction toys to help teach gifted and talented children, special needs children, as well as the general population.
The value of using construction toys as part of various curriculum is manifold: construction toys are open-ended (requiring divergent thinking), offer team building and cooperative learning opportunities, and allow participants to experience development and growth of their projects through delayed gratification. This essay discusses the three leading construction systems that I have used in my instruction, and compares and contrasts their relative benefits.
Even when a teacher is using the most durable construction toys, supervision is needed of the equipment and supplies. Experience has shown that the instructor should train all children to find and use what
is needed, how to combine individual projects into a greater “collaborative” project, and to insure that every child is making a constructive contribution to each session. Time must also be set aside to instruct the children how to clean up and sort the materials in order to instill a sense of accountability for every participant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
