2. The term is used to describe a product that meets one of these criteria.
It has qualities that will protect the environment.
It has replaced artificial ingredients with natural ingredients.
For example, a cleaning product may be considered green for two distinct
reasons.
It may be manufactured without phosphates in order to reduce a source of
pollution in the water supply, which makes it better for the environment
than a cleaner that contains phosphates.
Or it may contain ingredients derived from natural sources to lower the risk
of health problems that can be caused by exposing the skin to artificial dyes
or fragrances

3. HOW IT EFFECTS HEALTH
• Fertilizers are a mixture of toxic chemicals which are absorbed
into the plants, leading toxins to enter the food chain via vegetables and cereals
and water creating health affects increase and spread rapidly
- Contaminated water may contain high levels of nitrates and nitrites, causing
hemoglobin disorders.
- Heavy metals such as Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and Uranium have been
found in fertilizers, which can cause disturbances in the kidneys, lungs and liver
and cause cancer . Over 29 popular fertilizers tested positive for 22 toxic heavy
metals, including Silver, Nickel, Selenium, Thallium and Vanadium, all directly
linked to human health hazards.
- Ammonium Nitrate exposure cause other health problems such as eye and
skin irritation, producing a burning sensation. Inhalation exposure can result in
irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs. One can also experience nausea, vomiting,
flushing of the face and neck, headache, nervousness, uncontrolled muscle
movements, faintness and collapse.
4. Potassium Chloride interferes with nerve impulses, and interrupts with
virtually all bodily functions and mainly affects heart functioning. It can
cause all kinds of gastric and stomach pains, dizziness, bloody diarrhea,
convulsions, headaches, mental impairments, redness or itching of the skin
or eyes.
- Cadmium : Ultimately enters the human tissues resulting in diseases
such as tracheo-bronchitis, pneumonitis, pulmonary edema, renal failure,
osteoporosis, and many others. Lettuce (Latuca sativa L.), found in great
quantities in countries like Brazil and others in South America, uptake Cd
very easily, with an average amount of 870mg Cd/Kg. Yet, human beings, via
the gastrointestinal system, only uptake about 5% of the Cd through food.
However, those lacking iron can uptake up to 6% more. Hence, this can be
harmful to them because Cadmium poisoning, which comes from its
excessive intake, can lead to kidney, bone and pulmonary damage. The “Itai-
Itai” (it hurts-it hurts, in Japanese) , discovered in Japan in the year of 1912,
is caused by Cadmium poisoning, which results in acute pain in the joints
and spine
5. · Chemical pesticides can have far-reaching effects on human health. They can
contaminate the quality of surface water and groundwater, as well as cause toxicity
within most individuals who consume pesticide-sprayed fruits and vegetables. Since
most farmers use these fertilizers on their farm, animals receive first-hand exposure to
these toxins--thus causing people who ingest non-organic meat products to experience
pesticide toxicity, too.
· Chemical fertilizer is more "hygienic" because natural fertilizer can cause viruses or
bacteria in plants which leads to disease in humans who eats them. It is also much
cheaper than natural fertilizer. The use of chemical fertilizers has a great importance
for the worlds food production and food prices. If we didn’t had the opportunity to use
chemical fertilizers it would have been higher food prices. This would have affected
poor people the most. Chemical fertilizers are very useful because it works as fast food
for plants. They can absorb the nutrients immediately and the fertilizer works quickly.
One of the benefits with chemical fertilizers is that it’s custom-made for our
requirement. If the soil is rich in nitrogen and potassium, it will need a fertilizer that
will take care of the lack of phosphorus. Chemical fertilizers give us the option of using
phosphorus-rich fertilizers.
6. · The three main nutrients that plants needs supplies of are nitrogen (N), phosphorus
(P) and potassium (K). All fertilizers contain either one or more of these nutrients.
Nitrogen makes sure that the plants evolve and lets the green parts grow. Phosphorus
has a lot to say for the development of the root system and the plant quality. Big and
strong roots provide a healthier and more resistant plant. Potassium is essential for
the bud placement and fruit quality. Potassium also has much to say on the plants
ability to endure the winter.
· The biggest issue facing the use of chemical fertilizers is ground water contamination.
Nitrogen fertilizers break down into nitrates and travel easily through the soil. Because
it is water-soluble and can remain in groundwater for decades, the addition of more
nitrogen over the years has an accumulative effect.
· Knowing and understanding the effects of chemical fertilizers doesn’t do us much
good without action on our part. Knowing how to protect our health is what counts. If
you’re on well-water have your water tested regularly by are put able lab. Support
organic and sustainable agriculture. Know your farm and your farmer and understand
their practices. Take part in safe guarding organic practices and standards. Visit Organic
Consumers for details.

8. MAJOR HEALTH RISKS
- Cancer Synthetic fertilizers increase over six times the risk of dying of cancer
types including brain cancer, lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL), prostate
cancer, leukemia and large intestine cancer
- Met hemoglobinemia is a blood disorder in which an abnormal amount of
met hemoglobin, a form of hemoglobin, is produced. Met hemoglobin is produced
instead of the essential hemoglobin, responsible for delivering Oxygen to the red
blood cells. This causes a difficulty in delivering sufficient Oxygen to all body
tissues, and is linked to birth and development disorders, such as the "Blue Baby
Syndrome".
Depending on the amount of fertilizer consumed, it may cause disturbances of the
kidneys, lungs and liver and even cause cancer. This is due to the toxic metals that
fertilizers have. Fertilizers remove the nutrients of the soil, damaging the soil and
the local environment. Fertilizers, after being mixed with the soil, gradually reduce
the fertility of the soil.
9. ADVICE TO THE SOCIETY
Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on
techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and
biological pest control. Depending on whose definition is used,
organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides (which include
herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) if they are considered
natural (such as bone meal from animals or pyrethrin from
flowers), but it excludes or strictly limits the use of various
methods (including synthetic petrochemical fertilizers and
pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic
use in livestock; genetically modified organisms human sewage
sludge; and nonmaterial’s.) for reasons including sustainability,
openness, independence, health, and safety.
