two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider
the statement and the following assumptions and decide
which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.
Give answer
(A) If only assumption I is implicit
(B) If only assumption II is implicit
(C) If either I or II is implicit
(D) If neither I nor II is implicit
(E) If both I and II are implicit.
QUESTIONS
1.Statement: It is desirable to put the child in school at
the age of 5 or so.
Assumptions:
I. At that age the child reaches appropriate level of
development and is ready to learn.
II.The schools do not admit children after six years of
age.
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
Since the statement talks of putting the child in school
at the age of 5, it means that the child is mentally
prepared for the same at this age. So, I is implicit. But
nothing about admission after 6 years of age is
mentioned in the statement. So, II is not implicit.
2.Statement: Unemployment allowance should be
given to all unemployed Indian youth above 18 years
of age.
Assumptions:
I. There are unemployed youth in India who needs
monetary support.
II.The government has sufficient funds to provide
allowance to all unemployed youth.
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
I directly follows from the statement and so is
implicit. Also, the statement is a suggestion and does
not tell about a government policy or its position of
funds. So, II is not implicit.
3. Statement: "If you trouble me, I will slap you." - A
mother warns her child.
Assumptions:
I. With the warning, the child may stop troubling her.
II. All children are basically naughty.
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
The mother warns her child with the expectation that
he would stop troubling her. So, I is implicit. The
general nature of children cannot be derived from the
statement. So, II is not implicit.
4.Statement: A warning in a train compartment - "To
stop train, pull chain. Penalty for improper use Rs.
500.”
Assumptions:
I. Some people misuse the alarm chain.
II.On certain occasions, people may want to stop a
running train.
Answer: Option E
Explanation:
Clearly, the penalty is imposed to prevent people
from misusing the alarm chain. This means that some
people misuse it. So, I is implicit. The alarm chain is
provided to stop the running train in times of urgency.
So, II is also implicit.
5.Statement: If it is easy to become an engineer, I don't
want to be an engineer.
Assumptions:
I. An individual aspires to be professional.
II. One desires to achieve a thing which is hard earned.
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Clearly, nothing is mentioned about the professional
nature of the job. So, I is not implicit. The statement
hints that one rejects a thing that is easy to achieve.
So, II is implicit.
6. Statement : The school has decided to cancel the
summer camp this year
Assumptions:
I. No entries have been received by the Institution for
students willing to join the summer camp
II. It is being cancelled because the weather is too hot
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
• Because the school was not receiving any student entries
for participation in the summer camp, that is why it was
cancelled. The second option is not implicit because the
camp is being conducted in summers, so the weather is
expected to be hot.
• Candidates can refer to the questions given above and
expect similar type of questions and format of questions
to be asked in the final examination as well.
7. Statement: "To keep myself up-to-date, I always
listen to 9.00 p.m. news on radio."- A candidate tells
the interview board.
Assumptions:
I. The candidate does not read newspaper.
II. Recent news is broadcast only on radio.
Answer: Option D
Explanation:
The candidate listens to news on the radio does not
mean that he does not read newspaper or that radio is
the only source of recent news. So, neither I nor II is
implicit.
8.Statement: Believe me, I have read it in newspaper
X.
Assumptions:
I. Newspaper X gives reliable information/news.
II. am reporting exactly as it is given in newspaper X.
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
The narrator in the statement clearly insists on the
reliability of the fact that what he said, he had read it
in newspaper X, and not on the truth of what he said.
So, only II is implicit.
9. Statement: "You must learn to refer to dictionary if
you want to become a good writer." - A advises B.
Assumptions:
I. Only writers refer to the dictionary.
II. All writers, good or bad, refer to the dictionary.
Answer: Option D
Explanation:
It does not follow from the statement that only writers
and nobody else refers to the dictionary. Also, nothing
is mentioned about bad writers. So, neither I nor II is
implicit.
10. Statement: Interview conducted for selecting
people for jobs should measure personality
characteristics of candidates.
Assumptions:
I. Performance on job depends on personality
characteristics.
II. Personality characteristics can be measured in
interview.
Answer: Option E
Explanation:
According to the statement, the personality
characteristics of candidates should be essentially
measured in interviews before selection for jobs. So,
both I and II are implicit."
