“Match Us!”
Match Us!
Directions: Identify the statements if it is
implicit or explicit and label them as explicit
column and implicit column.
Match Us!
Explicit
1. The chemical formula for
water is H₂O.
2. The Earth revolves around
the Sun in approximately
365.25 days.
3. Conductors, like copper,
allow electricity to flow
easily.
Implicit
1. The sky is dark, and the wind
is strong; a storm might be
approaching.
2. The battery is corroded, which
suggests it hasn’t been
replaced in a long time.
3. The leaves of the plants are
drooping and yellow,
suggesting they might not be
receiving enough water.
EXPLICIT MEANING
Explicit – describes
something that is plainly,
directly and clearly
stated, something that is
communicated in a
fashion that leaves no
room for interpretation
or confusion.
Explicit meaning comes from
information that:
- Is clear, not vague
- Is Straightforward
- Is Obvious
- Does not leave room for
multiple interpretations or
confusion
When it comes to explicit meaning, the
message is stated.
EXAMPLE
“Giovanna and Rahul will pick up the garbage from the savannah during recess
time,” said Mrs. Bovell.
Look at Mrs. Bovell’s instructions. She gives clear
and specific details. She:
-named the students
-identified their task
-indicated where and when they must complete the task
Her instructions are straightforward and does not leave
little room for confusion

IMPLICIT MEANING
Implicit - describes
something that is not
clearly and indirectly
expressed, something
communicated in a
fashion that is implied.
Implicit meaning comes from
information that:
- Is not clearly stated
- Requires the reader/listener to
think critically
- Encourages the reader/listener
to draw conclusions
When it comes to implicit meaning, the
message is implied.
EXAMPLE
“The savannah is dirty. Someone needs to be responsible and clean it
soon!” said Mrs. Bovell.
Here, Mrs. Bovell does not assign any student
the task of cleaning the savannah nor does
she instruct them when to do it. She says that
someone needs to do it and that it
is the responsible thing to do. She,
therefore, is implying that it would be
responsible for a student to volunteer.

INFERENCE MEANING
Inference - is an act or process
of using clues and evidence to
conclude. You have to “read
closely to determine what the
text says explicitly and to make
logical inferences from it.” You
must be able to identify both
explicit and implicit information,
so you can make inferences
about what you read.
Example text:
"The streets are wet, and
people are carrying
umbrellas."
Inference: It has been
raining or is currently
raining.
What is the importance of the role of implicit
and explicit information?
EXPLICIT
Explicit details are often
required when it is
important for someone
to deliver a message
that is clear. For
examples, instructions
should be explicit.
IMPLICIT
However, sometimes it may be
necessary to communicate something
indirectly. For example, if you wish to
gently suggest to a friend that they
need to brush their teeth because
their breath is smelling awful. You
would need to rely on implied
meaning because being too direct can
offend them.
Group activity
Directions:
Group 1 will perform a news report with the topic: “Recent
Natural Disasters and Their Impact” using explicit
statements.
Group 2 will write a dialogue with friends’ conversation
about the topic: “Their observation about weather
conditions in their area” using implicit statements.
Group 3 will perform a role-play in a given text and then
make an inference in a given statement.
