Knowing Yourself
A SPIRITIST VIEW
Knowing Yourself
919. What is the most effective method for
guaranteeing self improvement and resisting the
attraction of wrongdoing?
“A philosopher of antiquity once said, ‘Know thyself.”
The Spirit’s Book, Chapter 12, Moral Perfection, Self-Knowledge
Knowing Yourself
“As in the most ancient times of dead
civilisations, we must reaffirm that the
greatest need of the human creature is still
that of knowledge of yourself.”
O Consolador - Chico Xavier/Emmanuel, pg. 80 (free translation)
Knowing Yourself
“The true Spiritist can be recognised by their
moral transformation and by the efforts they
employ in order to dominate their bad
instincts.”
The Gospel According to Spiritism, Chapter 17, item 4
How easy is it?
Self-Examination
Reflection
Introspection
Knowing Yourself
“Self-knowledge is the key to individual improvement. However, you
may ask, ‘How does one judge one’s self? Aren’t all human beings
subject to the illusions of arrogance, which diminishes their flaws in
their own eyes and makes it possible to find excuses for them?”
“When you are in doubt regarding any of your actions, ask yourself
what your judgment would be if it were done by another. If you
would find cause for reproach in another, it cannot be less
reprehensible when done by you because God’s justice is universal
for all.”
The Spirit’s Book, Chapter 12, Moral Perfection, Self-Knowledge Q919
Knowing Yourself
“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the
patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the
skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are
preserved.”
Matthew 9:16-17
Self Education
“Proper education is the key to moral progress. When the art of
training the moral nature of human beings is as easily understood
as the art of training the intellect, a corrupt nature can be
straightened out just like a crooked sapling. However, this practice
demands a great deal of tact, experience, and profound
observation.”
The Spirit’s Book, Chapter 12, Moral Perfection, Q 917
Self improvement
It is a continuous process of self-knowledge, modelling us progressively in the
spiritual experience, in every way of our existence.
It’s the transformation of the old self, loaded with secular trends and errors, in
the new self, active in the implementation from the teachings of the Divine, inside
and outside.
It is the means of giving new directions to the values that we already have, and
correct wickedness whose roots we ignore or we are not motivated to change.
It is acquisition of self-awareness to learn to be, to exist, to be realised as divine
creature that we are.
Self Improvement
“At the end of each day I would assess my conscience, review everything that I
had done, and I would ask myself whether I had failed in some duty, whether
someone might have reason to complain of me. It was thus that I arrived at
knowing myself and in seeing what there was in me that needed to be reformed.
If you review all your actions of the day every evening, asking yourself whether you
have done good or bad, and praying for enlightenment from God and your
guardian angel, you would acquire great strength for self-improvement.
Review what you may have done, first against God, second against your
neighbour, and lastly, against yourself.”
The Spirit’s Book, Chapter 12, Moral Perfection, Self-Knowledge 919
