Surgical Site Infection: Its Causes & PreventionNehaNaayar
An infection that occurs in the part of a body after surgery is known as Surgical Site Infection (SSI). The incidence of SSI is monitored by the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (NNIS) system of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In India, according to NNIS data, SSIs are the third most frequently reported nosocomial infection and are associated with substantial morbidity that endangers a patient’s life. Let us understand in details about surgical site infection, the causes and the preventive measures.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

In this ward there are patients with surgeries
related to GIT disorders such
as(appendectomy ,cholecystectomy, hernia,
etc.
So when patients complete surgery in
operation room , patients admitted to this ward
and may be develop incision infection called
surgical site infections .
5. Definition
SSI : the infection of wound can be defined
as the invasion organisms through tissue
following by breakdown of local & systemic
host defense .
6. Surgical infection is major problem in surgical
practice.
In 1992, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC)
revised its definition of wound infection creating
the definition surgical site infection SSI to prevent
confusion between infection of surgical incision &
infection of traumatic wound .
Accounts for 15-25% of all surgical infection &
increase cost of healthcare.
7. Wound healing and care
1. Demonstrate use of senses in observing
skin/wounds (looking, touching , smelling).
2. Routine care of wound and surgical drains.
3. Recognize signs/symptoms of inflammation .
4. Correct technique of changing clean and sterile
dressings.
8. Wound
A break in the skin or mucous membrane
and alteration in integrity of skin .
9. Types of wound
Clean wound – not infected usually intentional
such as surgical wound.
Contaminated wound –high risk of infection.
Infected wound –dirty wound contain bacteria
and signs of infection.
Open wound –skin or mucous membrane is
broken.
11. Bacteria in surgical wound
The most common causative organisms associated
with wound infection include :
• Staphylococcus Aureus
• MRSA
• Streptococcus Pyogenes
• Enterococci
• Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
13. Risk factors for developing SSI
1. Broken skin
2. Age (young /old)
3. Nutritional status
4. Chronic disease (DM,HTN)
5. Medical therapy – steroids ,chemotherapy and
radiation
14. Principles of tissue healing
The body's ability to healing is influenced by:
Extent of damage, i.e. skin intact or broken
Person state of health, i.e. nutrition status
Body's response to healing
Healing is promoted when wound is free of
foreign bodies and bacteria
