La pena de muerte, pena capital o ejecución consiste en provocar la muerte a un condenado por parte del Estado, como castigo por un delito establecido en la legislación; los delitos por los cuales se aplica esta sanción suelen denominarse «delitos capitales».
Uso de penas de muerte en el mundo (2013):
Abolida.
Suprimida para los crímenes no cometidos en circunstancias excepcionales (como los cometidos en tiempo de guerra).
Contemplada como una sanción penal, pero ya no aplicada.
Contemplada como una sanción penal, aún aplicada.
La muerte de criminales y disidentes políticos ha sido empleada por algunas sociedades en un momento de su historia, tanto para castigar el crimen como para suprimir la disidencia política. Actualmente la pena de muerte ha sido abolida y penalizada en casi todos los países europeos (excepto Bielorrusia), y la mayoría de los correspondientes a Oceanía (como Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Timor Oriental). La mayoría de países latinoamericanos han abolido la pena de muerte, mientras que en países como los Estados Unidos de América, Guatemala y la mayoría de los estados del Caribe aún sigue siendo aplicada. En Asia la pena de muerte está permitida en democracias como Japón e India. En África, aún se usa en Botsuana y Zambia.
