英語も日本語も同じでは？
Japanese and English… There is a very general similarity between
the two intonation systems in that both organize the tone features
into hierarchy of prosodic structures, from the groupings of tones
into pitch accents at the local level to the choice of phrase-terminal
tones and the manipulation of pitch range of larger domains.

日本語と英語では異なる？
Both Liberman and Pierrehumbert (1984) and Taylor (1995, 2000) have attempted to apply
Fujisaki's model to English, but have been unable to reproduce certain English contour
types - without, again, arbitrarily locating certain phrase commands and/or arbitrarily
specifying the size of the phrase commands. The principal difficulty is in modeling low-
rising accentual contours, such as … that is completely absent from Japanese.

今回の研究の目的
• 外国語教育の立場からの問題として、「母語の韻律的特徴がい
かに目標言語発話の韻律に影響を与えるか」というテーマがあ
る。
• 日本人の英語学習者の英語イントネーションについては、や
たらと上がり下がりの頻度が大である。
• 同様にF0の上下のレンジが大きい。
• このため、どの語、どのフレーズに焦点があるのかがわかり
にい。
• これらは本当なのだろうか？
• 定量的、かつ全体像をとらえられるような研究は？

分析手順１
• 母語としてのイントネーションの特徴を考察するため、RPの英
語、ロンドン南東部の英語、ニューヨーク在住者の英語について
，イソップ童話の「北風と太陽」（The North Wind and the Sun
）の朗読のF0を抽出し分析した。分析素材はこちらから入手：
• Celebration of Dialects and Accents, Vol. 1

• 関東方言および関西方言の日本人による日本語での「北風と太陽
」の発話についてもF0を分析した。素材は、重点領域研究「音
声言語」・試験研究「音声DB」 連続音声データベース (PASL-
DSR)から入手。筑波大学 知能情報生体工学研究室作成
• 日本人大学生（２名）により発話された英語の「北風と太陽」の
発話についてもF0分析を行った。

北風と太陽の原稿The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when a
traveler came along wrapped in a warm cloak.
They agreed that the one who first succeeded in making the traveler take his
cloak off should be considered stronger than the other.
Then the North Wind blew as hard as he could, but the more he blew the more
closely did the traveler fold his cloak around him;
and at last the North Wind gave up the attempt. Then the Sun shined out
warmly, and immediately the traveler took off his cloak.
And so the North Wind was obliged to confess that the Sun was the stronger of
the two.
あるとき、北風と太陽が力くらべをすることになりました。
「あそこを歩いていく、旅人の外套を脱がせた方を勝ちにしよう。」と決め
て、まず北風から始めました。
北風は、自信満々に「ひとまくりしてみせよう。」といい、激しく吹き立て
ました。
ところが、風が激しく吹けば吹くほど旅人は、外套をしっかりと押さえてし
まいました。
今度は太陽の番になりました。
太陽が雲の間から暖かな光を送ると、旅人は汗をかき始めました。
そこで、太陽がもっと光を強くすると、旅人は、「暑くなってきたなあ。」
といって外套を脱ぎました。
こうして、この力くらべは太陽の勝ちになりました。

分析手順２
分析ではWaveSurferを利用し，無音区間等F0が抽出されない区
間は削除し，１発話について完全に連続したF0データを分析
素材とした。

F0値は10msごとに抽出されるが、100個の区間（つまり１秒）ごとに
移動平均を計算し、同時にいわゆるボリンジャーバンドを±2σで描
画できるよう計算した。ボリンジャーバンドとは、移動平均値に同じ
区間の素データの標準偏差の２倍の値を足した値および引いた値をプ
ロットして挟まれる部分であり、移動平均とともに+2σと-2σの値が
プロットされる。F0値の95%程度はこの幅の内側に分布するはず。

さらに調査したもの
• F0が移動平均線を横切った回数
• つまり(F0i - MAVi) x (F0i+1 - MAVi+1)<0となる回数
• 東（1995) （音声録聞見データを利用した定量的韻律分析の試み、音声言語 V、
77-88、近畿音声言語研究会）では単純平均の値で分析したが、自然下降とダウ
ンステップを考え、今回は10msecごとのF0データ100個分（基本的には１秒分）
の移動平均値で考えた。
• ボリンジャーバンドの幅
• つまり、+2σ-(-2σ)=4σの値
• 句や文の切れ目では、通常次の句、文で急激なF0上昇が見込まれるので、その近
傍ではボリンジャーバンド幅は大きくなるが、全体としてのボリンジャーバンド
幅が大きいのか小さいのか、また値の分布がどうであるのかも調査した。この値
が大であれば、F0の上昇・下降のレンジが大きいということになり、小であれば
逆にレンジが小さいということになる。

結論
• 一般的印象：日本人学習者の英語発話のイントネーション
は何かくねくねして上下動が多い。余りにアップダウンが
激しい。
• 事実：くねくねは正しいが、実際にはその上下動のレンジ
は小さい。
• この事実は本当なのか：より多くの分析結果が必要。
• どうしてそうなのか、その理由、メカニズムの解明が必
要。
