Ivan Degtyarenko

On March 11, 2004, Madrid, Spain was attacked by radical Islamist terrorists through bombings on commuter trains during morning rush hour. Initially, the Spanish government wrongly claimed that the Basque separatist group ETA was responsible for the attacks, though it was later determined to be radical Islamists. The bombings killed 191 people and injured over 1,800 according to official reports.
The document discusses the 2004 Madrid train bombings (known as 11M) and their impact on Spanish politics. It describes how the bombings, carried out by Al Qaeda and killing 192 people, reversed public opinion polls ahead of elections and led to an electoral defeat for the ruling conservative party. The socialists gained power and promptly withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq, reflecting the public's opposition to involvement in the Iraq War that motivated the bombings. Victims' families criticized how politicians and media exploited the attacks for political gain rather than seeking truth and justice.
The Hurricane Katrina Accident Adria RodriguezFrancisco Perez
Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest and most expensive hurricanes in US history when it formed over the Bahamas in August 2005. It caused major flooding and damage after making landfall in Louisiana and severely failing the levee system in New Orleans, submerging 80% of the city under water for weeks. Over 1,800 people were killed and $90.9 billion in damage was caused, primarily impacting New Orleans and surrounding areas. Within two days of landfall, rescue robots were deployed from a university to assist with search and rescue operations.
The document describes someone's memories and feelings about the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City. They recall being at their grandparents' house as a child and watching the news break that planes had crashed into the towers. It was initially thought to be an accident but then a second plane hit, revealing it was an act of terrorism. The attacks dominated global news coverage for weeks as details emerged. Though the person was young, they felt informed by witnessing the initial reports and remember their family's shock and dismay. Eight years later, the events of 9/11 are still discussed daily and shaped global responses.
Presentation for the Association of Science Education Annual Conference at the University of Birmingham, 9th January 2014 by Dr. Francisco Pérez Garcíah
The document provides information about the educational systems of six countries: Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, France, Turkey, and Poland. It discusses the ages that school becomes compulsory, typical school schedules and holidays, compulsory subjects between countries, and differences in grading systems. The document also covers topics like transportation to school, school lunches, tests and exams, assistance for students, uniforms, and accommodations for students with disabilities.
04 A Knotting The Small World With GatekeepersWesley Shu
This document discusses the "caveman" social structure of cohesive clusters connected by bridging connections and gatekeepers. It describes benefits like synergy and faster information flow within clusters, but also problems like groupthink. Gatekeepers help counter insularity by bringing in new information from outside. Examples are given of industries like furniture design in Italy that benefited from strong connections between different parts of the industry. The document also discusses how the world is smaller with talents more able to move freely, and that companies should focus on maximizing information inflow through the use of gatekeepers.
This document provides the course programme for a class on plant biodiversity and health. The course includes presentations, practical laboratory activities, and field trips. It will cover topics like aromatic plant biodiversity, essential oil isolation, plant drug development, ethnobotany, and applications of plant biodiversity in health care and cosmetics. The goals are to learn about plant biodiversity in relation to traditional and industrial uses and its role in health, and to organize activities demonstrating plants' chemical diversity.
The document discusses Carnaval 2014 at Institut Pompeu Fabra. It was a celebration held at the school with music, dancing, costumes and food. Students and staff enjoyed participating in the festivities together during the annual Carnaval event.
