Christmas is the most important religious holiday in Ukraine, celebrated on January 6-7. On this day, Ukrainians glorify Jesus Christ by singing carols and preparing traditional dishes. Some key dishes include kutya, made with wheat, barley, rice, nuts and honey; uzvar, a sweet fruit decoction served with kutya; stuffed cabbage; vinegret, a salad of raw and boiled vegetables; varenyky, boiled dumplings stuffed with various fillings; and cabbage soup served with sour cream. All Christmas meals in Ukraine are traditionally meatless.
