Christmas in Romania
Christmas traditions vary from country to country. Christmas in Romania is a major annual celebration,
celebrated on 24/25 of December, as in most countries of the Christian world. At the beggining of December,
the Christmas lights are turned on all over the streets.
The Christmas and holiday season starts officially on November 30, on Saint Andrew’s day and ends on
January 7 with the celebration of Saint John . Other major holiday’s in this period are Great Union Day ,
Saint Nicholas Day, Saint Ignatius Day , Christmas Eve, Christms Day , Saint Stephen’s Day/New
Year’s Eve,and the Epiphany. On December 20, Saint Ignatius Day, Romanians start last preparations for
Christmas. On this date, they cut pigs for the Christmas Eve supper.
On December 23 night, children usually start caroling their neighbours. On the same date, women bake
traditional cookies to give children for their caroling.
Celebrations begin with the decoration of the Christmas tree during daytime on December 24, and in the
evening delivers the presents with family.
Romanian cuisine is a diverse blend of different dishes from
several traditions . Sarmale – Once of the Romanian dishes,
stuffed cabbage or grapevine leaves with a mix of rice ,
minced meat , onion, tomatoes and condiments. Mouth-
watering Romanians , this dish is usually served with cream
and polenta and is a sure presence on all Christmas tables
across the country.
Cozonac - One of the top Romanian dishes to try in
December, prepared with different fillings but traditionally
with walnut cream, cozonac is a culinary symbol that reunites
families and recalls memories of celebrating Christmas.
For most people Christmas time is a time of happiness and excitement . A time to be with
family and friends , eat traditional food and enjoy the good times. Everything is festive :
people, places, houses and everyone gets into the holidays spirit.
“The smells of Christmas are the smells of childhood”
