В современном английском языке существует только два
падежа существительных: общий падеж (Common Case), при
котором существительные не принимают специальных окончаний,
и притяжательный падеж (Possessive Case), при котором
существительные принимают окончание ' или 's.
Притяжательный падеж существительных в английском языке
определяет принадлежность.
1. Существительные в единственном числе образуют
притяжательный падеж путем прибавления окончания 's к форме
общего падежа:
the boy's dog - собака мальчика
my father's office - офис моего отца
Сначала употребляем существительное, которому что-
либо принадлежит, и только после него ставим апостроф.
Собака мальчика – сначала говорим, кому принадлежит
собака, т.е the boy’s dog, а не наоборот, как в русском языке, т.е
собака мальчика
2. Существительные во множественном числе образуют
притяжательный падеж за счет прибавления апострофа к форме
общего падежа, т.е мы ставим апостроф после слова во
множественном числе:
boys' school – школа для мальчиков
3. Однако существительные во множественном числе, которые не
оканчиваются на –s, образуют притяжательный падеж путем
прибавления 's:
children's books – детские книги

В современном английском в притяжательном падеже
употребляются только одушевленные существительные:
the lion's mane – грива льва
the minister's bodyguards – телохранители министра
the King's palace – дворец короля
Неодушевленные существительные обычно не употребляются в
притяжательном падеже. Вместо этого отношения принадлежности
в таких случаях выражаются с помощью оборота с предлогом of.
Например:
the leg of the table (А НЕ the table's leg) – ножка стола
the cover of the book (А НЕ the book's cover) – обложка книги
the roof of the house (А НЕ the house's roof) – крыша дома
Исключения
притяжательный падеж часто ставятся неодушевленные
существительные, используемые как одушевленные:
nature's laws – законы природы
fortune's favorites – любимцы фортуны
at duty's call – по зову долга
Также в притяжательный падеж ставятся существительные,
обозначающие время, место, вес:
in a year's time – через год
a day's work – однодневная работа
a pound's weight – весом в фунт
